Confused - latest upgrades X3 sat nav

Hi,

Sorry in advance if this subject has been mentioned but I am a newbie and in need of some advice. I purchased a 2004 X3 3.0i Sport 3 weeks ago and want to upgrade my sat nav to latest software and maps.

My Operating System - SW 4-1/30
My software is - 2004-2 (V23)

are these the latest upgrades?
Operating system - V30
Software - 2008-1

Please help with these questions:
Can someone please explain the difference of the OS and Software?
Is it possible for me to upgrade and do I need 2 discs to upgrade OS and Maps?
Is it just a case of getting these latest discs and loading into DVD/CD player?
What will be the benefits of upgrading?

I have also been reading about other upgrades i.e. speed camers, petrol statons etc etc anyone else know anything about these extras?

Thanks in advance for all your help
Dan

I have seen this upgrade on ebay - anyone tried this?

V30 will come up on your Nav setup screen as 4-1/91 (V29.1 which is the latest for the Mk4). The latest DVD mapping is currently 2008-1 HIGH for the Mk4 i-bus system (which we have in the X3).

The FIRMWARE update is something that you can do yourself and requires the download and burning onto CD - you can get that from links here (see the V30 is available sticky).

The MAPPING DVD CAN be purchased as a (ahem!) copy from unscrupulous ebay vendors, but we don't discuss that here. You can spend your hard earned £240 at a BMW dealer to get a cosher copy, get a genuine copy off ebay (though the latest DVD's are always much more expensive than a 1 cycle out of date version, say 2007-2).

As for speed cams etc, you will need to either get the 'pimp my nav' application to add camera's from a paid-for source such as PocketGPSWorld, or do it by hand the old fashioned way like we used to do!

Personally, I no longer bother, as I have a GPS enabled PDA (XDA Orbit) and use a little app called CamerAware which gives me the cam updates each month and has voice warnings for all camera types. You need to understand that the BMW nav software is pretty dumb, and doesn't have the facility for POI Warnings, so you cannot set an alert for cameras.

Oh, benefits of upgrading - Firmware will give you 3D mapping, and better routing algo's. New map DVDs will give you up to date roads and POI's.

Hope this helps.

PS. how do you find the 3.0 X3? Do you have the squeeky door seals?

Hey Trapdoor,

Cheers for the quick reply just to clarify:

To upgrade I need to seperate discs:

1. Firmware - are you saying the V30 is no good to me i need to get the V29.1 as this is the latest for my system and to do this i download from you link, burn onto CD or DVD and load into my dvd?

2. DVD mapping 2008-1 - find a copy or older version on eb*!

As for speedcameras think I will give it a miss, but thx for the tip.

really enjoying my X3 no squealy Door Seal but did have a problem where the driver door refused to open when central locking ativated, really weird it seemed to fix itself now and is fine....fingers crossed.

Cheers
Dan

Yes, you need a FIRMWARE CD - this you can create by downloading the image from the link I gave, and follow the instructions. This is placed in the DVD drive and will update the Nav firmware. The V.30 firmware image is what you need which will update your Mk4 to 4-1/91 (actually V29.1 as V30 doesn't have an update for the Mk4). I think the version you have installed on your system at the moment is V.23 - this is pretty old.

DVD mapping should be the newest you can get/afford - it's expensive from a dealer but there are many knocking around on fleabay -just make sure if you are paying good money you ensure it is an original and not a copy, as many unscrupulous sellers try it on and put 'this is a backup DVD' somewhere in the listing in tiny text... just because the picture shows an original DVD doesn't mean that is what you will get.

That is something you can perhaps play about with when you get your system up to date - have a good read on the forum(s) about what you can and cannot achieve. Having speed cams (and other added POI's like Little Chef, Sainsburys etc) can be useful, but the POI's are limited by the lack of POI warning - OK if you want to use them to navigate to (such as petrol stations, MacDonalds etc) but not much good if you want then to warn you en-route such as speed cams - the X3 is perhaps a bit easier in this respect as the nav monitor is much more in the line of vision, but you still have to keep looking at the map more than is safe really...

I find the X3 is ok - I prefered my 330 Sport saloon, but needs must, and it just didn't have the load capacity of the X3. It drives much like the 330 so was a good compromise. Trim finish is poor though I feel.

I had a similar Central Door locking issue on the 330 - not yet on the X3. It was fixed under warranty though.

Good luck with the update and in finding a new(er) map DVD.

Mark.

Cheers Mark for your reply, I am now a lot wiser on updating my Sat Nav. I have got 2008-1 on order and have downloaded firmware V29.1. Happy days!!

I am going to have a browse around the forum for add on POI's as I think they can be very benefitial even if we can not got them announced on arrival.

Sorry but a few more queries....

I had a quick look for my DVd drive this morning but could not find it, where about is it?

Did your mechanic say what the 'driver door' central locking problem was? Although mina has fixed itself do you think i should get it checked out whilst under warranty just in case it happens again?

And finally when pairing up my mobile with bluetooth will I require a pass key, if yes don't suppose you know what that is ?

Again thx in advance for your help, you really have helped me out a lot.
Dan

Good stuff - I have a few different POI's - checkout PocketGPSWorld as there is a section on free POI's that can be converted and used

Open the boot. On the nearside (LH side) you will see a removable panel with a plastic 'button' - press the button and the panel will hinge down from the top (and you can remove it). Behind the panel is the Nav drive, TV module (if you have one) and Bluetooth ULF module.

Think it was a jammed actuator rod, but I don't remember fully as it was back in 2003

The Bluetooth Passkey should be on a card in your user guides pack, with the Telephone manual. If you don't have this, then there are two ways to find it. (3 actually, but you probably won't want to do the last one just yet).

1) See if you can see the Passcode label on the ULF module - this is difficult though as typically the label is on the side closest to the vehicle and is hidden, and in the X3 the ULF module is in a really difficult position to see clearly

2) Take the car to your BMW dealer and get them to read the code from the diagnostic port (if the car is under warranty, and they failed to provide the passkey when you bought it, then they should do this FOC - get them to code your options for Car and Key memory at the same time

3) Buy a Resler i-bus interface and a copy of NavCoder and read the passkey yourself; with this you can also code the nav, TV, ULF and LCM options, though not Key and Car memory yet (we're still waiting )

Have fun with the X3, and I heartily recommend getting an i-bus interface and NavCoder if you like fiddling with your car settings and want to learn about how things communicate on the bus.

Cheers,

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Cheers for your reply, I have found my passkey and my dvd drive

Whilst I am waiting on my upgarde disc for sat nav upgrade I have been having a look around for POI's and map upgrades. Firstly I found a few 2008-1 iso files on torrents and have downloaded one. Not sure what to do with it, do I just burn this to a disc using imgburn and than load into my nav dvd drive?

Also had a good look around PocketGPSWorld and yes some great POI. I'm a bit confused how to add these to my sat nav, i did find this post for speedcameras - http://www.x3world.com/navigation-sy...tml#post425336

Is this the best solution that you used?
Do i have to do this for every POI I want to add - imgburn, copy/paste files etc etc?

Think I might just got for pimpmynav as I am not very tech on all this

Cheers fopr your help
Dan

To be honest Dan, I don't know much about stuff offered on download torrents - I am always a bit cautious about any 'warez' offerings as they have the potential to really screw things up if they contain altered or malicious code. However if you want to go down this route you need to ensure that the iso file is for the HIGH DVD not Business or Professional.

Regarding the POI's, doing it manually is a PITA and you have to make sure all stages are completed correctly otherwise the POIs won't show in the search or on the screen (or the POIs will be corrupted if not converted across properly). I think the 'Pimp your Nav' application is the easiest and best option as it allows you to create many categories and get a visual of where they will go on the menu etc. I have to say though that I don't have it (yet), but each time I fiddle with the DVD adding stuff it takes ages to remember what to do!

I will drop you a PM, so watch your in-box.

Cheers,

Mark.
