2002 3.0i: Screen Dark / All Sound from Stereo Cuts off after 2 min

Hello, I'm a new poster but have been a visitor of this site for years. I am hoping I don't need a new head unit but I'm not optimistic...

Recently I had some electrical weirdness: issues with turn signals / reverse lights sporadically not functioning, then one day the Nav unit's screen never came on with the "BMW" and legal warning. The stereo would power on but sound only comes out for about 2 minutes. Only turing the car completely off and back on again will allow the radio to play for another 2 minutes.

The screen has not lit up again since this happened a few weeks ago, and the stereo's non-functionality is pretty maddening. I have (twice) disconnected the battery and let it sit for several hours before re-connecting (and letting it sit) and restarting the car, and this procedure did not help.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any chance of an inexpensive fix? If this has been discussed before, a link to the relevant thread would be much appreciated.

PS i have the DSP and premium sound options, USA car
