2002 3.0i: Screen Dark / All Sound from Stereo Cuts off after 2 min
Recently I had some electrical weirdness: issues with turn signals / reverse lights sporadically not functioning, then one day the Nav unit's screen never came on with the "BMW" and legal warning. The stereo would power on but sound only comes out for about 2 minutes. Only turing the car completely off and back on again will allow the radio to play for another 2 minutes. The screen has not lit up again since this happened a few weeks ago, and the stereo's non-functionality is pretty maddening. I have (twice) disconnected the battery and let it sit for several hours before re-connecting (and letting it sit) and restarting the car, and this procedure did not help. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any chance of an inexpensive fix? If this has been discussed before, a link to the relevant thread would be much appreciated. PS i have the DSP and premium sound options, USA car

i have the 6cd changer in the back, plus the 1-disc navigation disc drive. this morning i noticed that the 1 disc nav drive does not have its 'power' light lit when car is on, nor will it eject disc. perhaps the probelm lies back here...?

Odds are, you have the MKIII navigation computer, and it died when the car lost power.
Yours is the CD-based nav computer right? The CD-based MKIII nav computer has a design flaw in which it can fry if it loses power before it fully shuts itself down. This started when you first noticed some strange electrical issues, so my hunch is that a low battery killed your nav computer. The radio shut-off is directly related to the nav computer. The DSP amp is programmed to expect control inputs from the nav computer. (The nav computer runs the entire A/V system). If the amp does not detect the nav computer on the car's network, it will shut itself off after a brief time. I do not know of a way to fix the MKIII. Your best bet is a use replacement from somewhere like eBay or a trusted parts reseller. I would recommend an upgrade to the DVD-based MKIV computer. It does not have the failure weakness of the MKIII, and it has a number of other great features over the MKIII.

I'd have to agree with brian, It does sound like the Nav computer has died, try and get hold of a mk4, it should sort your problem.

The nav computer is the device in the trunk that accepts the map cd.

thank you i just did a search on ebay and see that. Well I'm glad it's not the head unit that needs replacement.
If i got another mk3 unit to save $$, would I expect the same problem to happen again? perhaps I need a new battery?
