Mk3 dead and gone from menu

I recently bought a 2002 RR with Mk3 nav including Navteq 2002 disc installed and working well. Have latest Navteq CD ready to install but old disc is stuck in the machine. After removing nav computer from car and then reinstalling it there is now no red led light displayed on the front and navigation has disappeared from the monitor menu.
All connections seem to be correctly in place and my attempt at disconnecting the battery negative terminal for a few minutes has proved unsuccessful.
Is there a remedy for this or have I killed it.
I live near Birmingham UK

Prior to removing it did you make sure that the unit had first gone to sleep (no red light)? The Mk3 is very finicky about removing power, and doing so when it is still "thinking" can kill the unit.

It may have still been powered when I disconnected it.
How much damage would this cause.
Is it repairable.
Regards Eric
