GPS Antenna and Metallic Window Tint

I am hearing this should be avoided as the GPS antenna is mounted in driver side rear window, yet some are reporting they have used metallic window tint without issue.

I was planning on getting Solargard 20% tint all around... is this a BAD idea? Is the ceramic or hybrid tint a better idea?

Shop is telling me they have Suntek Carbon 18% Tint that is non-metallic and guranteed to work with GPS. Also does not fade, and lifetime warranty from fading. Better UV protection then metallic.

Add a metal foil over the cars antenna aperture and it will guarranteed reduce the signal level

For AM, FM, remote control, and GPS.

Don't put metallic foil on the rear window. Period.

Cool, the carbon stuff is only $10 more than the metallic. At $180 for the entire vehicle that's not a bad deal. I was quoted $600 for the ceramic tint.

Ended up that I did the entire car in 20% Solarguard metalized except for the driver side rear quarter panel window which houses the GPS antenna inside the glass itself (looks like defroster wires in the back window) - this was done with 18% Suntek carbon non metallic. No problems with GPS signal reception.

The GPS antenna on the X5 is located inside the spoiler. So, tint won't affect GPS at all-- it is already outside of the car. That antanna that looks like defroster wires is your car's "Diversity Antenna." That is for AM/FM/TV/other terrestrial reception. You did good to put non-metallic tint on the diversity antenna. Metallic tint kills AM reception and significantly degrades other reception.

Interesting. I thought for sure GPS antenna on 2000 was located in that window or in the pedestal below it.
