^ yep, seems like a step forward to me...

As for piracy, I dont' see how this would stop it. I'm sure someone will find a way to hook up a USB cable (or whatever cable) and transfer data as they wish...

It would be possible with hardware to allow the USB cable to write to certain areas of the disk and not read. At the end of the day, it boils down to how motivated BMW is to protect this data.

Who loses money from copied DVDs? Not BMW but Navteq. Unless Navteq is subsidizing work on piracy avoidance, I think the only good reason to do this is for performance. Hopefully they'll upgrade the CPU to match and the routing calculations will be near instant.

I'd trust a DVD ROM drive over a hard disk anyday.. hopefully they use Seagates with a 5 year warranty on them ... !! The NAV should be placed on a Flash drive rather than any Hard disk prone to failure.. but I guess that will be the next innovation ?

Faster access to map data is one of the reason. The are many reasons for hard drive.
Here is info on hard drive, which explains reason for hard drive. More info in this post

The system will include a 40-gigabyte (GB) hard disk drive, reportedly partitioned as follows (hopefully there will be more room for music and less room for names and addresses when we get final specs):
  • System 2GB
  • Music 3GB
  • Entertainment server 8GB
  • Navigation map data 12GB
  • Telephone (name and address) 10GB
  • Reserve 5GB

I was referring to a flash alternative to DVD, not a hard disk. You're right, a HDD isn't necessarily any more reliable than a DVD drive.

Apparently a re-installation, should it be needed, is done from a 2 DVD master set and consists of 15 GB of data which takes 107 minutes of programming time. Definitely far from high speed I'd say.
