MK4 Won't Accept Navigation DVD Please Help!

About a week ago my nav screen came up showing that it was loading the CD (or something to that effect) but it never loaded. When I opened the trunk I could hear it "spinning" but it would not load.

I tried to eject the disc and it came out fine. However, now I cannot get it to accept the disc again. I can hear it "spinning" even without the disc in it. When I direct the computer to go to Navigation, it says there is no DVD.

I tried to unplug the computer and then plug it back in but I got the same result. It would spin for a few minutes but would not accept the disc, even when I wait the several minutes and it stops the spinning sound. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

My battery died about 2 years ago and I had to buy a new computer, I hope I don't have to do it again!!!

Thanks for your help guys,
Cam

Hi,

I think your laser lens is dirty or broken. You can try to clean it or replace the laser unit.

What to do where to go?

Do you know how to clean the laser lens? Is this something I can do myself? Also, how can I clean the lens if it is not even accepting the DVD? Do you know if there are replacement parts that I can purchase? If so where? Thanks for your help!

Try with a standard CD/DVD laser cleaning disc. One that uses a wet-type cleaner (isopropyl alcohol or similar) and has a little brusch / pad that you moisten.

Get it from your local computer shop.

Confused

Thanks for your help. I understand what the CD/DVD laser cleaning disc is but how am I going to load it into the system if it is not accepting discs??

Ah. Different problem.

Remove nav, take off top cover.

Remove DVD drive

Clean all rubber rollers (that pull in the disc) with isopropyl alcohol - the rollers maybe dry/dirty/slippery

Reassemble and test

If it still doesn't work, get a replacement DVD mechanism.

Bad Dvd Laser

Bertus E46 saved me $2,500.00 (quoted by BMW to replace entire Nav unit) with his frame by frame directions on how to replace the dvd unit when my 03' x5 was showing the same symptoms as yours. $260.00 for the unit, including shipping and my NAV was back on line in 5 days.

Thanks.

I've gone ahead and ordered the replacement drive. I'm expecting it any day. I'll report back once I get it replaced and installed back in the M5.

Thanks again for the help!
