MkIV not reading disks

I've just fitted a secondhand MkIV sat nav module to replace my broken MkIII. I put it in and turned it on, all seemed fine on the monitor but when I selected navigation a message came up insert CD/DVD even though I had already put one in. I changed the CD to a different one I had and that didn't work either. I left it a while and then a message came up saying "error reading disk"

The unit seems to take the disk ok, it spins up and it ejects ok, just can't read them.

Any suggestions?

You could try a Laser cleaning disc.

I've tried that and it doesn't seem to help either.

I decided I might try to find an original copy of a BMW nav disk on DVD, mine are on CD and maybe just the CD laser part of the mechanism is faulty. So far I haven't got one, a friend has a range rover with DVD nav, that disk didn't work but I'm not sure if that was incompatible disk or faulty drive.

I'm not sure I'm following all your steps - replaced bad Mk3 with Mk4, but then did you attempt to load the software to update the system, before attempting to read a nav disc??? I don't know if the Mk3 CDs will work in a Mk4 DVD. You may need to get the DVD version of you area.

You can use the CDs in the DVD Player, but better with the Proper DVD Map disc of course.
Your MK4 is sounding faulty though, possibly Laser US?
If stuck I have 07-01 DVD Europe High Disc Genuine Boxed. PM me if you cannot source one.

I'm thinking the laser myself, I presumed the computer part is ok because the software is still on the unit and seems to be working ok

i've just tried a genuine bmw dvd and it still comes up with the error reading message. I'm going to see if I can get my money back, otherwise I have to change the laser mechanism.

I'm still confused with this thread? unless Mk3 software will recognize Mk4 nav dvd?
