Exclamation New September Nav OS?

Hi Jeff and everyone else...

Has anyone heard whether dealers are now updating the navigation OS to the 'new standard' as quoted from a recent www.germancarfans.com website article on BMW?

Apparently September is the month for it. Will the CD image file be posted here when it is available?

Thanks,

Paul Martin

Apparently a significant upgrade to the visuals on the Mk-IV Navigation system (as well as the systems in the vehicles with iDrive). It is unlikely to include any changes for older systems (ie. Mk-III and below).

According the BMW press release, the visuals will be easier to read and look cleaner. My guess, repeat guess, is:
- anti-aliased streets & text
- colour changes and startup logo changes to be in line with iDrive cars.

I would like to see:
- Perspective view
- Improved map redrawing, particularly in 'direction of travel' view and when zooming (smooth rotation rather than popping view changes)

These are probably unlikely as the limiting factor may well be the processing power of the computer.

I noticed that VDO Dayton has released some new colour DVD based navigation systems recently (www.vdodayton.com) with hardware which appears very similar to their earlier systems (which is what the BMW has - an OEM version of the MS5500). The new MS5700 doesn't look too different...

These new systems show a perspective view... so you never know... it might require nothing more than an OS upgrade...

don't count on anti-aliased streets and text, that would require a hardware upgrade.

Err.. I did say guess.

How can you be so sure that it requires a hardware upgrade? Unless one knows the capabilities of the chips within the computer it would be premature to rule anything in or out.

It may be that out of all the 'older' BMW navigation computers, the Mk-IV unit is the only one that does have the processing power to display improved graphics. We will soon find out, one way or the other.

It actually has antialiased streets and some shadows, no 3D-view. Here are pictures from German MK4 user: http://www.arcor.de/palb/thumbs_publ...lbumID=3402327

And there is (in German) a message about the new features that a user of MK4 has noticed:

Well, there you go! Never say never.

Judging from the pictures (and from my flaky translation) I think the scrolling has been improved as well. It looks like the vehicle icon in those images (in 'direction of travel' orientation) is fixed in the middle of the map too - which is a nice improvement. I never liked the way it travelled to the edge of the screen before refreshing.

That is definitely easier on the eyes. Eagerly awaiting v26...
