You can do this yourself but one needs to follow directions carefully. Give this a careful read.

There are a lot of instructions on this forum on how to update the OS, where to find and download the OS, and how to burn it. It only takes 5/10 minutes to do the update. The dealer will probably charge a lot unless you have a GOOD relationship with your dealer. Search these forums and also read the Nav FAQ on the home page here.

Do a search on the forum, all the part numbers are listed in a post.

They do not have the info on what the 2009.1 updates are on their website yet and, when I followed up with Navteq, they said they would report that to their web guys. The updates shown are still from the 2008.1 version.

Unfortunately, it's their normal price of $199 + shipping + taxes (minimum of $222) if you want it. I've asked Morristown BMW what their price would be. It might be a while before they get them though.
When you can buy a GPS unit for less than $200 charging $200+/- for a software update sure seems like steeling.

The software update is essentially free if you DIY. The maps are what is expensive. I get by with 2 or 3 year old maps. Not a problem for me.

I am talking about the update of the maps, you can buy a portable GPS with current maps for less.
