Why is there no sticky post on "How to backup NAV DVD/CD MAPS" ?

Hi,

There are lots of guides on how to upgrade our Nav OS but nothing on how one should go about copying a NAV MAP DVD/CD.

The reason for my query is that I have the latest NAV MAP DVD for South Africa in my 335i. So I want to back it up and place the copy in a safe place. Is it possible and if so what steps should be carried out?

The other reason is that this is not that reliable. The MKIV does not work well with copied map disks. I used to try that with my map disks, but I gave up-- my MKIV frequently crashed and rebooted with copied DVDs. I tried all kinds of media and copy programs with no success. Then, I saw many similar posts here-- that the MKIV is unstable with copies. Some folks have success, but I believe that is more the exception than the rule.

Well hopefully I will be the exception. So what steps should I follow?

2. Insert blank DVD-R disk into computer drive
3. Use DVD burning software to attempt to make a duplicate

As mentioned above, the MkIV is very very fussy about the disks it will read, and even a disk that appears to work will occasionally crash the nav system.

As mentioned above, the MkIV is very very fussy about the disks it will read, and even a disk that appears to work will occasionally crash the nav system.

Some additional tips:
a. Use Verbatim DVD-R's (that are made in Singapore)
b. Shut down as many processes as possible on your PC (assuming PC)
c. Don't use other programs while burning (see point b)
d. Burn at slow speed -- not necessary 1x but no faster than 2.4x

Does ZA use DVDs or CDs. I thought I heard that OZ still used CDs. Are CD maps easier to reproduce? Maybe ZA map size is small enough to go on a CD? Just a thought. MKIVs will read either.

The latest Maps are DVD 2007 plus

What exactly does it look like when a DVD-related crash occurs? Does it affect the monitor or display if the monitor is in OBC mode (displaying OBC data)? I would have thought that when the display was not showing the map, a DVD problem wouldn't have any visual effect.
