Kenwood Nav vs BMW OEM

I have a '03 X5 4.4i with NAV a couple of aftermarket amps and subs installed. I have had problem with the aftermarket backup camera, and not very happy with the nav system. We recently turned in wief's Navigator lease, I had installed the Kenwood DDX7015 double din head unit with navigation siriur radio, ipod interface, rear camera all through the head unit. Touch screen absolutely awesome system. pulled everything out to put it back stock. We got her a Lexus, man that nav is great. Anyway I am seriously thing about installing the Kenwood system in the X5. Any reasons why I should not attempt this. Are there any X5 owners here that have had the Kenwood nav installed?

Be aware that if you remove the existing display from your X5 you will not be able to control and view all of the vehicle settings, trip computer, etc.

You will loose the total integration into Check Control display etc.
You will loose the antenna diversity feature
You will loose the TV (if fitted)

But otherwise I don't see a problem.
You have access to wheel speed pulses easily on the back of the instrument cluster or on the ABS unit
You'll have to run some antenna cables to the rear antennas (radio, TV if fitted, and GPS)
You'll have to run speaker cables to the rear to access the rear amp
You may need to run some heavier power cables - the ones for the screen are not designed for high current.

Do you know of anyone who has done this. I know there are some trade off's but it would be done professionally - and reversable if need be. Can't seem to find anyone who has modded the OEM nav with aftermarket. I think that this system in our Navigator and the Lexus system has me feeling that the BMW nav with the click wheel is less than adequate.
Thanks for the info.

Don't know of anyone myself. Here in NZ nav is so new and so rare that the BMW systems stands out as one of the best, thus noone wants to change it.

I just un-installed that exact system. I got a 2005 X5 and it had the kenwood ddx7015, nav system, and sirius tuner module. The wiring to make that system work in the car was ridiculous...AND, they left the factory headunit hooked up in the rear. I don't know if the people who installed it were idiots, but I spent 12 hours undoing the mess this weekend. They ran antenna, cd changer, speaker, and power wires to the back of the vehicle. They clipped about 30-45 wires in total (as in cut, not tapped). Then they made a mess of the harnesses. They cut the antenna cable. This was a PITA to reverse. I don't know if it can be done where it is easily reversible.

I decided to reinstall the OEM system because I didn't like that there was the factory headunit in the trunk, and I don't use Nav all that often.

If you have it done, take it to a reputable shop and ask them what they have to do to make it work, and let them know that you'd like to be able to revert back to OEM when you're done with the car.

Just my .02.

(Edit: the car originally had the factory NAV, so that's what I put back in)

Trevor,
I had the install done last week. Everything is working flawlessly. There was no need to cut the factory harnesses. The Kenwood Nav has its own harness, as well as the sirius radio harness. I did however loose function of my steering wheel control and my ability to make adjustments to the clock and such. I do have the display on the cluster panel however. So far it has been a good ungrade and I do use my nav alot. I am not that fond of the plate around the 7015 though, I am looking for someone to match the wood grain and frame the radio in wood.
Hope everything works out for you.

I'm glad that they were able to do that without affecting the factory stuff. They literally hacked the x5 apart to install mine, but I don't know what type of shop they took the car to. Glad it all worked for ya.

Hello from a newbie.

I also ordered yesterday the brand new Kenwood DNX-7200 with the onboard Garmin GPS. It will be installed in my 2002 X5. My car does not have the OEM navi. It came with the business radio and tape so no hacking to be done.

Together I ordered the Kenwood TV tuner, bluetooth, iPod video cable and back up camera. I will use mybimmer.net bezel for a clean factory installation.

Can't wait to receive the parts and install them.

kiojochen,

You mentioned losing the check control display. Are you referring to the display that show gas, trip mileage etc?? You also mentioned antennae diversity. What exactly is that?
