Don't worry, you will get it sorted out. You will also need to buy or build an I-Bus interface. I bought the USB version of this one for my car: http://www.reslers.de/IBUS/.

One more bit of advice... burn a copy of the latest OS CD to have on hand when you do the update. After you change the color/monochrome coding, the nav computer will ask you to insert an update disk to reload the color operating system.

Thank you Brian,

I already ordered the Ibus interface from Rolf. I am not sure how to link it to my E53 X5. I read that the easiest way is to use the CD changer, but which cable should I use between the interface and the changer ?

I do have a V29 OS on CD. That is not the latest but I didn't manage to burn a CD properly last time I tried, so I will have to do with this one..

The CD changer has a 3-pin plug that will connect directly to three of the four pins on Rolf's interface. The pins on the interface are labeled to help a little. The pin connections on the CD chagner plug are below. Basically, if you line-up Pin 3 on the CDC plug with the I-Bus pin on the interface, and you leave the forth "NTSC" pin unconnected on the interface, it will work.

CD changer pins:
Pin 1 Ground
Pin 2 Unswitched +12V
Pin 3 I-Bus

this is begining to take shape at least in my mind......

When I have everything ready I will then ask you how I do it from the laptop once I have everything connected....

I can tell you that if you guys manage to have me perform this job, it mean that really anybody can do it !

Hello again,

I have now in my possession both Rolf's UBS ibus interface (very quickly shipped by the way) and Jochen's novcoder downloaded onto my laptop.

I need primarily to recode my MK4 from mono to colour, and while I am at it (if simple enough) allow TV in motion (I have of course TV module installed in the car).

I understand I should use the CD changer cable from my car and plug it onto the 3 pins from the ibus interface (I suppose it is made to fit) excluding the NTSC one.

Then after connecting the usb cables and launching navcoder what should I do.

I have a E53, MK4 mono coded and a 16/9 widescreen.

Thank you for your help
wingburger

What should I do next

It all becomes blindingly obvious when you look at Navcoder.

For TV: Code - TV - Enable TV when moving -> Code TV

For nav: Code - Navigation -
then select output mode Colour
then click "Code Output Mode"
You'll need an OS disc - it'll tell you that

Start NavCoder and look at it before you connect to the car!

Thank you Jochen,

I go down to the garage and give it a try.

If I can do it, then anybody can.

Carefully follow the I-Bus interface installation drivers in this link. The first time I tried to setup the drivers for Resler's USB I-Bus interface, I screwed it up. It is very easy, you just need to follow the steps.
