Tll us what software version is fitted to the nav - it's displayed in the top right corner of the "Set" screen.

The current version is 3-1/63.
Anything older (3-1/50, 3-1/40 etc) should be updated, as the software updates fix software bugs.

Once you have confirmed you have the latest software, please go into the Service Menu and report to us your GPS status.
To access Service Menu, go into the Set screen, then press and hold MENU until the Service Menu appears.

Report the GPS S/N readings, how many satellites are being receiver, your PDOP value and the GPS status.

You should also check the sensors:
Direction of travel should be Backwards in reverse, forwards in all other gears
Wheel speed pulses should be 0 when stopping, and with speed
Gyro should be 2500 +/- 100 when still, and go down when turning left, up when turning right.

And remember: when entering an address, you must select "Start guidance" to commence the route calculation.

Without wheel speed signal the satnav will struggle when it has no GPS signal.

Eg in built-up cities, in car parks, in tunnels you'll find the GPS stops working.

If you used the retrofit kit then it's easy to connect the wheel speed signal.
Even without, it's easy to connect.

hi kiwijochen
the soft ware is 3-1/30
i had 6 satelites
the gyro was working as you described
the speed signal was 0

see the thing is with the sat nav i fitted it wasnt a retro kit
it was fitted in a car before hand
and when i bouight it it was a budle of wires

fitting the speed signal
what sort of job is it and would you have an idea where i would find the wires to connect?

also if your saying that i dont have to have it connected then im guessing that isit my problem
but i will do the job with your help
do you recon that a upgrade in the software will cure my problem?
if so where can i get the upgrade from?

thanks for your advice very much appriciated

The speed signal might be your problem if your GPS signal is weak.
eg: if you are driving around a part of London where the you are on narrow streets and srrounded by high rise buildings, you can easily have GPS reception problems - if you have speed pulse connected, the nav keeps on working when it has no GPS signal. But no speed pulse = it stops working.

What PDOP and what satellite S/N signals were you getting? These figures determine GPS accuracy and tell us if your antenna is good.

Your software is very old, the current version is 3-1/63
It's worth updating. You will get split-screen mode and vastly improved graphics.
You'll need the BMW OS CD and the Key CD.
Both are here:
GREN.RU - Прошивки для Нави блоков БМВ

Any OS CD from V22 and newer has 3-1/63 on it.
When getting ready to burn the image, please check the image is Mode2/Form1 before burning - a Mk3 will read Mode2/Form1 CDs but will crash when reading Mode1
Tip: ImgBurn is a vey good reliable and free burning program (The Official ImgBurn Website)

The wiring diagram of the nav system is in the retrofit instructions. Ideally, you want to use the DF_AVL (or AVR) speed pulse signal (L or R front wheel speed pulses). Have a look at the wiring diagram, The supplementary wiring harness is what is used to connect the speed pulse on the retrofit loom, but because you used an original loom, the speed pulse wire should be in the main part of the loom.

Post some photos or describe the unused connectors and wires (with their wire colours) of the loom you used, and we'll tell you what wire is the speed pulse wire.

BMW logo only appears on cold start, not warm start.
Cold start only occurs after car is locked and left alone for min 60s

Wheel pulse:
On an E39 M5 get it here:

Wheel pulse = DFAVL signal = yellow/red
Pin 35 of ABS control unit in the engine bay

Or DFAVR, pin 18, yellow/white

Refer to the WDS for more places the speed pulses can be found
