Thanks again for the input. Yeah, I was thinking that I would need the disc anyway, so it is worth a try before replacing the expensive DVD drive.

Will this 2009.1 nav disc work in the MKIV?

The "please wait" is indicative of either a scratched, smudged or dirty disc or a worn laser pickup, you can just replace the laser unit (approx $30) or the whole cd/dvd carriage (approx $150).

I did this on a mates mk4 and it was easy and fixed his problem.

So... if the legit DVD doesn't work, he'd need to replace this part right?

yeap or just the laser, you can in some cases revert to using the CD map, as this uses a different pickup to the dvd pickup (and in most cases will still work).

Replacing the carriage took me less than 15mins, start to finish, and is like refurbishing the whole unit for cheap money.

BTW that ebay item is cheap too

Got a new MAP disc, but the MKIV won't read it. I bet you are right, it is probably the laser pickup. Can you buy this part from the dealer? Better yet, is there a way to access the existing laser to clean it? Has anyone tried this?

Thanks for all the replies and assistance BTW

Try a wet-type laser cleaner first (available at any hifi / music store

Otherwise, order a replacement drive:

Drive looks like this:

See here:
RealOEM.com BMW E53 X5 4.4i Navigation computer drive

Part number 65839197611

Also available via other sources, such as here:
Elektronik-Idee

And here:
Navigatie-onderdelen.nl | Navigation par -

Around 143 Euros for the entire DVD drive.

Is it me or is that V32 through the 'dealer' less than $8 US pre shipping. That is super cheap.
