Took the unit apart today, accessed the laser and cleaned it with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Reinstalled it and still get the same "please wait'..." message. I think I will order and replace the laser unit and see if this fixes the issue.

Do you get the replacement laser from a dealer? I would assume so...although it isn't broken out into it's own Part # on realoem.com.

Thats a $620 piece at the dealer (check prices at getBMWparts.com)

So I'd recommend you go the eBay route as I'd mentioned above and just buy this for $200:

Repair Kit For MKIV DVD SatNavs fitted to BMWs 2001-6 - eBay (item 110390972292 end time Jun-15-09 11:01:57 PDT)

Dealer only sells entire drive mech, they don't sell lasers separately

You have to get lasers from CD repair shops or laser suppliers.
If you have no experience dealing with lasers and identifying and replacing them, then you should look at replacing the entire mech.
