Smile Nav/display gone dim

Odd problem here.
2001 model retrofitted with Nav 4 and widescreen display, software version 4-1/00 Everythings been perfect for months and no recent changes to software, maps or hardware

Driving along and the monitor suddenly throws a wobbly and just continues to open and close (for cassette access) endlessly fior at least 100 cycles until I could get into a motorway services/stop. It only stops when I switch off allow the car 15 minutes to fully hibernate. Restart and all is perfect except the display is now really dim.

I have tried to set it above mid point on brightness under 'Set' but it reverts each time I switch off.
Lights dimmer knurled button is set to full up and that does indeed increase the brightness a little

Any sugestion on:
1) how to force the display to stay on brighter setting?
2) any idea what caused this to happen and what it tripped?

Thanks in advance guys
