There are three different components that can give the car voice recognition. The original SES module (stand alone voice recognition module) supported voice commands for both phone and navigation. Then, the Bluetooth ULF module came out, and it had the same VR capability as the SES module integrated with the Bluetooth capability. Finally, BMW came out with the TCU module (telephone, Bluetooth, and BMW Assist) that only had VR for the phone commands.
Your car probably has a TCU module.
