Best way to reset NAV Computer

I am on vacation and on the road. Yesterday when starting the car noticed that NAV computer screen did not flip up or turn on. (E83). Panic set in. Pulled both fuses to check, plugged them back in and NAV came back. Only thing is that my CARPC doesn't come back. I have a feeling it has to do more with the NAV OS computer than the interface. Is there a fast non invasive way to reset the NAV computer? I am currently in the mountains at a hotel with a lot of snow around and a temperature of 10 F outside. Can I reset NAV with diagnostics menu? The vehicle is packed with luggage so its difficult right now to get to the NAV computer unless I remove all the luggage. Any suggestions?

I was able to reset the NAV / CarPC combo by unplugging the NAV computer (10 minutes) - all is well. Did it in my garage. With temps at around 10F it was difficult to try when traveling.

Hi Pete.

I also own an E83 in which I retrofitted the navigation system in June. I have the same monitor and I experienced the same problem (monitor rarely will not flip up when starting the car). It is strange and it must be related to cold weather, as it was in my case too when it happened. Freezing temps outside.

I do not know the solution, but i did tried lifting the monitor screen by hand. I found out that it was in operation even if it was facing down!! When I switched off the car, the monitor turned off and flipped down as it should. Switched the car on again and all was ok. I guess it must by something related to cold temperatures i.e. low battery current at startup perhaps??

I am curious to find out what's going on too..

Hello Vassilis,

It was indeed a wierd issue. I was in Florida with nice temperatures. The E83 NAV worked well the whole trip until the morning I was departing Florida to head back to Illinois. I also have a CarPC. I started the vehicle. The NAV screen did not flip up. I moved it up manually but there was no display. I pulled the two fuses and put them back. The NAV display came back up. My CarPC did not and I had to reset when I got home. Other than than the E83 drove well thru the mountains on a 2400 mile trip.

Ensure you have newest 4-1/00 SW on the nav, as many bug fixes were for screen operation

Actually it was not the carpc that didn't boot up but rather the video interface between the computer and the navigation unit in addition to NAV screen. We were still able to listen to music but had to work the PC controls blindly but at the time all I really cared about was the NAV monitor display which did work after pulling and replacing the fuses.

KiwiJochen,

Not sure which SW I am using. Thank you for the suggestion.

This is the first time that I have seen this happen.

It was a bit humorous in that I originally planned on leaving earlier in the morning (0800-0900) had everything all packed and ready. I had moved the vehicle to make it easier to pack. Everything was working fine (carpc and nav). About 20 minutes later starting the car to leave noticed nav screen didn't pop up. Panic set in for just a few minutes until I pulled the fuses. You get used to the NAV display and didn't want to drive for two days without it.

Relating to NAV FW: Not sure which version I am using. I just remember modding it a bit with new graphics and new bootup screen a couple of years back. It was the firmware which took the DVD to higher capacity DVD reading (4.7 to 9.4 G). I am guessing I can do same with current FW version eh?

The trip was excellent in the E83. 2400 miles round trip. 75% mostly thru snow. Vehicle handled great and was very comfortable. I haven't driven down to FL in about 20 years. Here are a couple of pics. 1st one is moonlight picture in FL and second one is at a place called Monteagle, TN near the Smokey mountains which was our halfway point. About one hour or so South of Monteagle we hit a blizzard in the mountains. It was interesting and enjoyable driving. I guess it doesn't snow too often there in Tennessee.
