Hi Cream,

once again Id like to thank you for the info. Although I have ordered a new flash eprom I wanted to try flashing my existing eprom by using your method (need the BM54 in the car to finish my hifi installation). Unfortunately I couldnt find my cell phone serial cable (cable for Siemens cellphone with USB<->TTL singal).

So I was thinking - I do own a blue VAGCOM OBD cable (USB<->OBD2)
Its based upon the ft232bm chip. Here comes the noob question... do K and L line from OBD adapter correspond to RX and TX from serial adapter (with TTL signal) or ist it another kind of signal? Am I making any sense?

Hi,

I managed to desolder all 44 pins using my soldering iron. I heated up the pins and lifted them just a litle bit using a tiny sewing needle - one by one. Still - I couldnt remove the eprom - it was glued to the board. So I decided to use dental floss to loosen the eprom. But I only got half way through. Then I decided to use my fingers to gently pry the eprom of the board. After five minutes it still wouldnt move - I was about to give up - all of a sudden it came off in one piece

After that I used a pump to remove some of the solder. I soldered the new eprom to the board - heated up every pin twice - no additional solder needed - just used what was left on the board - no bridges. I reassembled the whole thing and installed it in my car.

I turned on ignition - wtf - where are my radio stations - they come up after 10 seconds - ah ok.
I pushed the "INFO" button and turned on "Audiotext" - changed to CDC - and here we go -> ID3 TAGS
But I couldnt hear anything - turned up the volume - still nothing - turned it up further - damn - still nothing - big shock.

At this point I really thought that Ive killed the BM54. Have I just wasted some 400 Euros? Ahhh wait... forgot that Ive cut all speaker wires to install the high-low adadpter. Also I have removed the OEM Harman Kardon amp Hence the lack of sound - no amp - no music. So I have not yet been able to check all functions but it behaves just the way its supposed to.

So Mad Presley, Toadhall and Cream, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Im really happy that it worked out. I have unsuccesfully searched for info on the firmware update for weeks until I found you guys!

THANK you for sharing the info with the forum and THANKS for the effort! Keep up the good work!

@Toadhall:
The AMD eprom ist the one I ordered from progshop.com
If they dont ship to your area - let me know

Thank you to both Silyboy and Cream for the great information supplied on this post.
I have discovered that my radio is the BM53 variant, but looking at the pictures of the PCB, appears to be identical to the BM54 with a single tuner front end instead of the twin tuner of the BM54. I have not been able to locate a firmware update for the BM53.
My reasoning at this time is that the C16x and 29f400 are part of the ibus MCU control, separate from the Tuner functionality, and as such the 29f400 firmware load for the BM53 should be the same as for the BM54.
I'm going to try to flash my BM53 with the BM54 flash load using the bootstrap loader method on the assumption that the firmware will be identical.

DOES ANYONE ON THIS BB KNOW FOR SURE IF THE FIRMWARE FOR BM53 AND BM54 ARE THE SAME, OR AM I ABOUT TO MAKE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE?

Alternatively, if BM53 is different firmware to BM54 and anyone has access to the BM53 firmware update, could they possibly PM me.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

thanks to all.

bm53 and bm54 are very different

bm53 can only track one radio station at a time$

bm54 tracks multiple radio stations, continuously dynamically updates RDS data, and responds to EON and TP info on the 2nd tuner.

So the firmware will be very different, and I would not expect the bm54 firmware to work on the bm53.

BM54back question

Hi,

I was wondering if someone had the nessesary inside knowledge to solve a problem that I seem to be rather stocked with at the time being.

I havnīt got a X model but an E39. The tech is pretty much the same although so I thought it would be okay to share my probs with you guys.

My E39 is a 1996 saloon. Fitted with the DSP (not dsp2) from the factory as well as cd changer, 4:3 screen, analog tv, telephone and a BM24 radio module. It all started to go very wrong when I had a water brake in due to an old talelight gasket. It seems to be quite common that the BM radioes are dead after water damage. My BM24 worked just fine up till this event and after I experienced a period with FM come and go. I started to listen to the cd changer instead due to this annoying problem. Later the FM was totally cone. I then heard that the antenna amplifier on the drivers side could be over the hill so I replaced this with a brand new one (new type) but with out any improvement. I then bought a BM54back from a friend of mine who said that it would fit 100% I only needed the antenna adapter which I bought seperatly from BMW. I did get a "newer" type of screen image after the install of the BM54back but there still wasnīt any FM in the speakers. The stations were shown on the screen only the sound was missing totally in radio mode. I had the first generation navigation named MK1 which I later replaced with the latest MK4. I was told that I would be needing a special cable for that MK4 to get it work with the rest because it was different jacks on the MK1 than the later types such as MK2, MK3 and MK4. I knew that because I had just replaced a MK2 with a MK4 in a friends 528i from 1999. The cars are pretty much the same and it worked fantastic with his car so I hoped that it would too in my case. I was wrong although. The MK4 did work execpt for the sound which is a vital part of automobile based navigation systems . A friend of mine who works for BMW told me that he was pretty sure we had to switch the sound from some pins to others to get the navi sound work properly. The guy I bought the upgrade cable from did mention that these pins had to be refitted elsewhere. So we did but still no navigation voice! I now was starting to get a little tired of all this. My BMW friend couldnīt put his finger on any issues we had forgotten. I went home shortly after in a rather bad moode and with even two sound probs on my hand.
This leads me to you guys as you might be my last resource in this hi-tech hell on earth . I have no more suggestions my self other than I think the BM54back simply is far too new for my rather old 5-serie. According to ETK the BM54back is for a 2000/2001 model. Pin 1 and 2 on the old type round pins on the BM54back seem to be out of funktion on this module. Shouldnīt they have something to do with the speakers normally?
I have watched the picture from the BM54back posted here in this thread where a member wired to soldering point to hock up the navi sound. My unit seems to be a little different not much but a little. The trick he made wouldnīt solve any FM voice probs would it?
I do have pictures from my BM54back I just havnīt uploaded them here yet by I will try to again.

I really would appreciate any useful knowledge or leads that may solve my frustrating probs at the time being.

Thanks in advance.

Do you still have CD sounds? Does DSP take digital audio from the CD changer?

Yes I do have cd sound. As far as I know the sound runs analog via the coax from the cd changer to the dsp?

I don't know about the details of your system, I know that some DSP equipped cars used a digital audio signal and the tuner module passed all the volume control duties to the DSP. I have never heard of an analogue dedicated CD connection to the DSP, but that is not to say it didn't exist. Do you have the opportunity to find a $50 DSP amp to try replacing the unit you have?

Could you buy a SOT-060 adaptor and use a small speaker to test the FM with the speaker outputs from teh BM24/BM54back?

You think it might be the DSP? The thought has accourd to my self as both FM and navigation voice failed. I will try to replace the DSP like you suggest. If Iīm lucky the friend of mine with the 528i has one that fits. Unless of course a 1999 has the DSP2 then Iīm on to e*** instead. Our systems are pretty much identical although.
By the way I have antenna diversity also. Not that it means a whole lot. First I thought that the radio signal simply was missing so I started to replace the antenna amplifier in both sides of the car. All radio stations are displayed on my 4:3 like I wrote earlier so I pretty much think the radio signal isnīt the prob here.
One thing we did which Iīm not sure I mentioned is that we had to run the old blue cable (18 pin) from the TV module directly into the new MK4 to get the updated grafics on the screen. Only a white cable now is plugged in the TV module (white 18 pin unused before). The white 18 pin cable came with the upgrade cable from MK1 to MK4. The upgrade cable also had a blue 18 pin which should be attached directly into the MK4 unit. Like I said the blue 18 pin from the original wiring to the MK1 now is attached there to get the new grafics work. It means that the new 18 pin now is unattached at all.
I simply ainīt sure wether the TV module has something to do with the sound or now? I mean what if the FM and navigation voice arenīt being correctly re-routed? Would that be possible or is it 100% sure that the TV module has nothing to do with that? TV option is no longer present on the screnn menu of course. The white 18 pin does run directly into the TV module although!?

Sorry if I mix up things a little Iīm trying to do my best to explaine all details that I know of. I will also try to find the pinout information for the re-routed navi voice. The cd stops playing when navigation voice should be present I can see the instruction on the screen and like I said the cd is cut off. Cd is cut off 100% although which means I do have a BM54back which actually is a BM24 that cannot just fade music during navigation voice input?
