Navigation Volume Control

Hello all

I have a 6-speed 2004 E46 330Ci with premium, sport and winter packages, along with factory Navigation.

The Navigation system is running the most up-to-date software V32 (settings screen shows 4-1/00 in the upper left corner), with the most up-to-date maps DVD (both updated in the last few weeks.

The problem I have is with the volume control for the navigation voice volume in the settings screen. The Navigation Volume seems to only go from Loud (at the softest setting) to Very Loud (at the loudest setting). This has been the case for some time, but not since the car was new. I have no idea when it started or what the trigger was.

If I use the volume knob while the system is giving an instruction I can lower the volume completely for that instruction (whether or not the stereo is playing), but only for that instruction. The system resets to being very loud for the next instruction, which can then be lowered again while the instruction is being given, then will reset to very loud, and so on ad infinitum.

The stereo volume works normally.

I would like to once again have full control over the Nav volume. Any ideas???

Thanks

Dave

Are you saying that the nav instruction volume setting is actually changing in the settings menu by itself? Do you find playback is at the same volume for radio and CD/tape playback, or is there a differnce?

when i change the nav. volume in the settings menu it appears to operate normally - saying "softer" when i turn the control one way, and "louder" when i turn it the other way - but the volume never actually gets very soft.

Despite being set to the "softest" setting in the settings menu, once I use the navigation system, the instruction volume is very loud.

When the navigation system gives an instruction, turning the volume control knob during the instruction will lower the volume of that instruction. If the stereo is also playing, it will also lower the volume of the stereo.

The next Nav instruction will be at the original loud volume, whether or not the volume control was adjusted again after the first instruction.

The volume control works normally for the stereo at all times.

Hope that is clear.

Not fully clear, although I understand some parts. Can you say if when you reduce the volume using the knob then return to the settings menu, has the settings menu changed. Additionally, if you decrease the volume with the knob and leave it low, does the nav instruction come in at a higher volume later? Finally are tapes, CDs and radio all at the same volume?

Ah ok I understand what you are asking (I think).

I have had the volume in the settings menu at the lowest setting in an attempt to get the volume as quiet as possible. This means that reducing the volume using the knob has had no impact on the volume in the settings menu as it is already at the lowest setting.

I will try setting the Nav volume in the settings menu at a higher level and see if turning the volume knob lower changes the volume setting in the settings menu.

The nav. instructions are always at the same loud level.
Changing the volume with the knob only changes the volume of the Nav. System if the knob is turned during the instruction, and only changes the volume of that particular instruction. The next instruction will be back at the louder level

Turning the knob before and instruction or in-between instructions has no effect. It only works during the instruction.

If the stereo is playing at the same time, turning the volume knob during an instruction will lower the stereo as well as the instruction. The stereo stays lowered, unless the volume is increased again after the instruction.
Even if the stereo volume is not increased after the instruction, the next Nav. instruction will be very loud again.

Make that:

"Turning the knob before AN instruction or in-between instructions has no effect. It only works during the instruction."

And are tapes, CDs and radio all at the same volume?

Sorry Bob now I do not understand. Do you mean are they all at the same volume as each other? I do not have the "always loud" issue with tapes/radio/cd. The volume control knob works normally for radio/tape/cd changer

What I mean is do you need to radically adjust the audio volume when switching sources?
