Nope, it's bloody tight behind there. Whatever the cable arrives with will fit.

Nope. That ends in ISO, not FAKRA. Clcik the photo.

Nope, that's the thin Div (ZF) branch.
Cheers, will likely go for the Cooper one as I can't seem to find the right part on bmminiparts.

BTW I found this link that is quite handy so thought I might link it in for anybody who uses this thread as reference.

If it's not nuch more, see if the X5 one is 5M. I know that BMW trim the wires to the very shortest possible length, as an extra 1/2m of cable on a 10M cars could be $1m in waste parts. You will find the 4.25m cable to be a very very tight fit to lay after the car is trimmed out.

Any idea where I could find the part number for the X5 one? The CooperParts site is a bit thin on description and can't seem to find much on BMMiniparts.

61126907453 but I can't find any confirmation that it is FAKRA (NG). Perhaps check out the CD players (a cross ref shows they are used on E39) to see if you can find any pictures of the back. Equally the E39 touring uses a 4.85m cable, but I don't think that's FAKRA (it's the ISO one you linked at bminiparts)

Cheers, is it possible to purchase a 'standard' to FAKRA adaptor if I find that whatever I order isn't FAKRA?

Just taken a good look at the set up in my boot. First question, how is the carpeted panel that covers the BM24 unit actually removed? I was able to access everything by removing the nuts at the rear of the panel and gently bending it upwards but something is holding it down at the front. Surely I don't need to remove the rear seats to get this panel out?

Anyway, I was able to unplug the connector from the back of my BM24 and plug it into my new CD head unit and it all worked fine (except for it had no radio reception of course!). I'm feeling confident about doing this now. One thing I did note was that I had plugs for both of the inputs under the main connection. One I was expecting as i have a CD changer. Is the other one related to the nav? It had blue and yellow wires going into it but I couldn't trace where they went.

Yes that was nav audio.

Very few adaptors have the right sex FAKRA on. You want the one with the clip, not the hook. This one is the cheapest. With that, the E39 5M cable on BMminiparts, and a DIN-ISO FM adaptor (eBay) you would be rocking. If a little wobbly.

Contact this seller to see if he will do you a 5M jobby. Sorry, can't help with the trim.

Well, just thought I'd bring a conclusion to all this. Hopefully it'll be of use to others as well.

Last night I did the following:

Made up new loom to go from the rear connector to the head unit and ran this the full length of the car.

Made up FAKRA aerial cable using various adaptors and ran this to the front of the car.

Those two jobs alone probably took 3 hours.

I checked the wiring worked with my new CD player and then moved on to adding blue tooth and an aux kit.

The parrot Blue tooth was a doddle and links perfectly with my iphone with no visible parts at all. Just the controller hidden away in the glove box. The rest of the time, the steering wheel gives all the functionality you could need.

The aux in was easy too. I installed the socket in the glove box but I may move it to the switch panel between the cubby holes. Not quite decided yet. Something really cool about the aux working with an i-phone and bluetooth is that you can use voice commands to play tracks using the phone steering wheel button. So I can hide the iphone in the glove box and have almost full control over it.

Anyway spent another hour or so tidying everything up.

Really pleased with the results other than two things.

Lights on illumination isn't working on the head unit so the buttons can't be seen at night. Need to check my connections.

The other thing is that I had thought that the CD palyer would show OBC information like my old nav unit did but that doesn't seem to be the case. I can live with that.

Huge thanks to Big Bob for his guidance on this. I've achieved exactly what I set out to. I also have a nice big pile of bits to sell on.
