MKIV unit from bimmernav.com and E39 16:9 Wide Screen? and

My 2001 X5 has the factory 4:3 screen and I just found out my MKIII is fried so I thinking about upgrading it to MKIV unit and the wide screen.

I have two questions... first, has anyone bought MKIV refurbished units from bimmernav.com? or is there any other place I can purchase a unit with warranty and second, will a E39 16:9 widescreen work on X5? I was told by the bimmernav guys that a E39 widescreen won't work on the X5 because of the different viewing angle.

Thanks

They are correct about the viewing angle. When I went from a 4:3 screen to a 16:9 screen, the one I installed came from an E39 and while it physically fits, the viewing angle made the screen much less optimal than one from an X5. I ended up swapping in one made for an X5 and it made a huge difference!!

I see you are in Michigan. One just popped up on craigslist. I'm not sure if it is a 4:3 or 16:9, but it may be worth checking out - bmw x5 NAVIGATION MONITOR

This may help to change the view angle, if you buy one from a different BMW.

I know that it is the opposite way as you want to put a different 16:9 into am X5 but it can be done.

I checked that post and unfortunately it's a smaller unit... Thanks!

Don't forget some early TV tuners were 4:3 only and you'll need a 16:9 one if you have an early one. I think you will need to locate the option switch 4:3/16:9 in the TV tuner setup menu.

If you can make that work, it's a good deal or both parties. I did this with an owner of an e39 that had an X5 screen installed and it worked out great for both of us.
