Unhappy Newbie - Lost GPS Option

Morning peeps,

Hoping you can help me with a little problem...

I upgraded the firmware on my MK3 sat nav unit about 6 months ago (to Version 25) and every now and then, the display unit would reboot, albeit infrequently. Never really worried about it as always came back after it reset. Not happened for some time until this morning and driving into work, screen went off and stayed off. After coming to a halt, I switched the engine off and left it a few minutes but after turning ignition on again, the display comes back but now comes up with a blocky screen which has all the menu options and functionality except the GPS Navigation. There is colour to the screen and the TV works but menu displays are very basic and in large blocky font format.
Since come back to check the firmware download section and Ver 25 is no longer listed, only Ver 24 (and of course Ver 26 for MK4 units).

Does anyone know if Version 25 was buggy?

Can I reprogram my unit back to life by using Version 24?

Any help would be appreciated.

Typical it happens on a Friday when I rely on satnav to get me home through the heavy traffic!!

It sounds like your vehicle is losing connection to the MkIII nav drive. When this happens, the video module takes over the system and provides the menus that you are seeing.

First thing I would check are all of the connections to the nav drive (note - never remove the connectors on a MkIII when the drive is active, it can permanently kill it). If everything is properly secure and connected then you may have a nav drive that is starting to go bad. You could try doing a downgrade, but you would have to step back to at least V21.1 (V22 and higher all take the MkIII to 3-1/63 and from the MkIII perspective are all the same disk).

Many thanks for the advice Jeff, since checked connections are secure (whilst drive inactive) but think I have found the problem. I let the unit reset and popped out the cd (which was a copy of the original). I have since placed the original Navtec disc back in the drive, and all ok - so far. I realise now after browsing and entering addresses using the original cd, it is far quicker at accessing the data, whereas before it had really slowed up with the copy. Guess it was a case of attempting to read a corrupt cd that caused the unit to flip (reboot).

Thanks again,

Will it still be worth downgrading the firmware though to say V23?
