Slobodan Milosevic, Former Yugoslav Leader, Is Found Dead

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- Slobodan Milosevic, the former Yugoslav leader who orchestrated the Balkan wars of the 1990s and was on trial for war crimes, was found dead in his prison cell near The Hague, the U.N. tribunal said Saturday.
Milosevic, 64, apparently died of natural causes, a tribunal press officer said. He was found dead in his bed at the U.N. detention center.
Milosevic has been on trial since February 2002, defending himself against 66 counts of crimes, including genocide, in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo.
The trial repeatedly was interrupted by Milosevic's poor health and chronic heart condition. It was recessed last week until Tuesday to await his next defense witness.
His death comes less than a week after the star witness in his trial, former Croatian Serb leader Milan Babic, was found dead in the same prison. Babic, who was serving a 13-year prison sentence, committed suicide. He testified against Milosevic in 2002.
A figure of beguiling charm and cunning ruthlessness, Milosevic was a master tactician who turned his country's defeats into personal victories and held onto power for 13 years despite losing four wars that shattered his nation and impoverished his people.
Milosevic led Serbia, the dominant Yugoslav republic, into four Balkan wars, but always managed to emerge politically stronger. The secret of his survival was his uncanny ability to exploit what less adroit figures would consider a fatal blow.
Each time he would bounce back, skillfully reinventing himself in a series of political transformations -- as a devout communist, a reform-minded nationalist, and again as a communist at a time when most of the world had abandoned Marxist ideology.
He once described himself as the ''Ayatollah Khomeini of Serbia,'' assuring his prime minister, Milan Panic, that ''the Serbs will follow me no matter what.'' For years, they did -- through wars which dismembered Yugoslavia and plunged what was left of the country into social, political, moral and economic ruin.
But in the end, his people abandoned him: first in October 2000, when he was unable to convince the majority of Yugoslavs that he had staved off electoral defeat by his successor, Vojislav Kostunica, and again on April 1, 2001, when he surrendered after a 26-hour standoff to face criminal charges stemming from his ruinous rule.

Input

I just wanted to give a little input regarding Milosevic. No offense, but what world knows about him is only what was presented by CNN, and other medias. I am from Serbia, and I did not like him, and I did not like the system, which brought me to USA. My point is that during the war that began in 1991 Serbia (former Yugoslavia) was fighting against terrorists, but which was presented as genocide to the world. It was a civil war between Serbians, Croatians, and Muslims, and it was WAR, and like it happens in every war people kill each other. The only problem was that the world only saw the part where the Serbians were killing everybodt else, but they did not show that Bin Laden came with his troops to fight on the side of Muslims in Bosnia, and he was getting weapons from the same US that is now chasing him. Regarding the bombing of our country from the side of USA and NATO because of so called genocide on Kosovo. The terrorist on Kosovo fall under the same group of people that the US is now in war with in Iraq. I'm not arguing, I'm just saying that people all around the world don't know what really happened there, and therefore they judge the whole country. Remember that every politician is the same, they only care about $$$$$$, like the president Bush that we have here. He does not care how many young Americans is going to die in Iraq, he only cares about how much money he will make. I hope that you will understand my oppinion.

Let me get this straight, you're attempting to add insight into Milosovic, a self described "ayatolah khomeini", a man who STARTED 4 civil wars to gain more power for himself, by saying that Bush is worse and doesn't care that Marine's are dying in Iraq?

Maybe you could explain to us how/why those civil wars happened because all you've said so far is that the world is confused and that the US, NATO and Bin Laden opposed the Serbs.

Well I have not heard that his two daughters went to Iraq to fight. If he can send sons and daughters of a working class American to war, why he does not send his own kids? And like I said, I am not arguing I'm just trying to make some thing clear. War happens because the rich people want more money, and not because of bringing the freedom to somebody.

So unless the President of the United States has a child active in the US military then the US is not allowed to use its military?

Regardless, how does Bush have anything to do with this story about Milosovic? And you didn't answer my questions in my previous post. Are you sure you're trying to explain what happened in Yugoslavia? I don't think you are..... you started out by saying that you don't like milosovic, and that the world is confused about him and what went on in the former Yugoslovia, yet you haven't dont much, in fact you've done nothing,to clear up the confusion, all you've done is bash Bush.

I fail to see what you're "making clear." If anything, you're making an incongruent and baseless argument. I do not think highly of Bush; but, to compare him with the likes of Milosevic is utterly insane.

Contrary to what many people think, there is a LARGE constituency of Americans who is informed, educated, and does not reach conclusions based purely on what CNN presents.

To even attempt to justify Milosevic's actions is delusional. HE (Milosevic) started those wars. HE is at fault for genocide. By the way, it is not "so-called genocide"; what he did WAS genocide, and I'm just saddened that we did not get a chance to kill the sonofabitch ourselves.
