Any creative ideas to beat the summer heat?

I am sick and tired of this summer heat. Over 100 degrees during the day, and above 80 degrees night time. Yes my home and office is equipped with air-conditioning. At least it is not humid as the East Coast. But I cannot stand the heat. I do use the conventional wisdoms such as drinking lots of water, and religiously working out early in the morning. I work here so I cannot move to the beach.

I set the thermostat at 78 degree nighttime it works well for everyone else but me.
I don't sleep well night time and I don't function during the day time.
Any suggestions?

You sleep better at night if you set the temp lower at night, IMO. Here we have to in order to keep the interior humidity down. The other thing is that your office may just be recycling old air, so the quality is poor.

I don't do well in the heat either. It is 30C here, not high for So Cal but unusual for Vancouver. My work thermostat has been lowered (I had to pry the tamper-proof cover off, but it was worth it). Home thermostat is on 76 day and night. Suggest you buy the other family members a down quilt, it worked for me.

78F?? I keep mine between 65F and 67F!!

I think you have to train your body so that you get used to the heat. I just went to the beach to catch up on some tanning yesterday, it was hot but now I can pretty much deal with the heat better. It takes time getting used to.

If you think SoCal heat sucks, what more for our Arizona and Nevada neighbors. I would probably cook my meals on my forehead if i did live there and save on gas/electricity.

72- winter, and summer

Spring and fall we keep all the windows open.

Try taking the subway in NYC in July/August.... you've all got it good in comparison...

buy a room airconditioner from costco or sams club (I don't know how many times i've mentioned these wholesale stores:rofl: but they have a lot of good S**t) for $100-$200 and you can set your own temperature for your own room.

I see you are living in hot hell. If nothing else works there is always suicide.

PS: Joking re: the hell part.v:)

I don't think it is matter of getting used to it. I've been that way since I was a kid. That motivated me not to be a contruction worker, despite the fact that lots of unionized construction guys has great benifit. A friend of mine who is a doctor in Oriental Medicine told me to stay away from chicken, from eating it to be exact. His theory was it tend to generate more heat. Well it seems to help.

I feel for brothers and sisters suffering in Arizona and Nevada. I was recently there. I am currently locking myself in home office and set the thermostat at70 degree. I won't be out of there until the firework starts tomorrow night.

I wish my family members are comlient enough to pull out down comforter. My dad in visiting me longer than I hope for he complains that my house is like a meat locker. Thank you all for advice.:)

I have 3 unit central air conditioners for my home which is less than 2 years old. They seem to work pretty well considering it is a big home with high ceilings. The problem is the location of the thermostat that controls master bedroom where I sleep. It is on the isle that shares the 2nd air conditioner thermostat that regulate the guestroom and the kitchen. When the kitchen is cool my room gets hot. I have a ceiling fan fully blasting right above me but I don’t think it is good enough.

I agree with Jaba - it's mind over matter. It doesn't bother me to play around of golf in 100 degree whether, in fact there are probably more tee-times available because of cancellations. Nor does it bother me to ski in zero degree weather.

But if you really can't handle the heat - there's only one alternative. Go to the mall. Where as can you burn an entire day in air conditioned comfort? Go shop, eat dinner, see a movie. Hang out in the Mens Dept at Nordstrom. Mess with the gadgets at the Apple store. Spend all day in Sports Chalet. Look at girls.

In fact, I just talked my wife into going to the mall. See ya!

Take a cold shower?

SANguru 07-03-2006 08:35 PM

78?? you might as well go sleep outside. Thermostat at 68 here at night and I sleep well. I love the summer though in both norcal and socal. take advantage of it.. go swim, bike, run and enjoy the great outdoors. Many of the leftcoasters would kill for our weather.

Welcome to my Hell  I have mine set to 78 degrees at night as well. With the ceiling fan also blowing down on me, I'm quite comfortable. Instead of 78, try 76. It doesn't sound like much, but it's a big bifference. I'm assuming you sleep on top of the covers or with just a sheet.

I know I hear its so cute! I want to see it and the lake house, another good way to beat the heat I did sat was the spa, a good facial always makes me feel better!

I just read about the Lake House .. sounds like another one for my list.

Oh, a facial sounds sooo good right about now ... :) Met a cute massage therapist at breakfast today ... he does housecalls ;)

X5Flyboy 07-04-2006 06:28 AM

No a/c up here, just a fan - no humidity - usually at the movies 12-3pm or a nap - usually a 40deg temp drop from high to low, so late afternoon, evening, and morning quite comfortable

'Move' (from NJ to Idaho) was my solution

I feel your pain LVGirl. I was just there.

During the hot summer night, only well-refrigerated public place available here would be gentlemen's clubs. Unfortunately it costs way more than electricity bills.
The oddest thing is only ladies work there get to take off all their clothes.
Do you think it is because I am black? :)
