I grabbed this deal last week with both hands xcept I brought the 50 inch with free shipping and $400 off the total was $1479 for a 50 inch plasma...I have it set up the pic is good although it does take some time to adjust the pic exactly the way the you like it...more tint...less tint...etc. GREAT deal none the less...I was looking at this tv with ambilight last year and it was $5K on the net from shaddy places

Thanks K, for your good info...I wasn't arguing w/KMan; I just didn't
"get" the opin that the specific TV was "really" 1080, as my slight understanding lead me to believe it was not.

I'm lowtech>>>notech, but I've been paying attention to you and some of the gang that have forgotten more than I'll ever know about this stuff. :)
I read yours and all the other good posters bits here and do a lot of other reading on these kinds of topics. In the end though, if the pic looks good, and the price is decent, it's fine by me.

I'm rarely a first adopter and the pinnacle of HiFi/Vid stuff is not on my
need to get list, but that 60" Sony,NoBaloney is Titz, when the sig is
top notch.

Thanks again for your clear to understand and informative post(s)!
Hope the late summer is treating you and C well...you ought to wander over this way, in Fall.

More importantly, it can't support 720p in native format which is due to the 42" size more than anything. The pixels can only be so small to fit in all the lines of rez in a 42" display. This is changing with the new more densely-packed pixel displays in the new generation of 1080p displays. This 1024x768 display can't play content that is broadcast at 1280x720 (720p) without manipulation of the original signal, it simply won't fit the screen. When you get up to 50" plasmas, you get 1280x720 (exactly 720p) or 1366x768 which can both play the all-important 720p content with zero scaling or conversion... pure HD.

For this reason (physical size vs pixels) many people who watch a lot of DVD's and standard definition content (cable or satellite) buy ED 42" plasmas instead of HD 42" plasmas. Non-HD content (480i/480p) tends to look better on lower-rez ED displays due to no scaling, vs. watching that same content on an upscaled HD display. A very good DVD player will likely scale the image for the screen better than this display will.

All that to say, to watch 1080i or 720p HD content on a 42" display, you really want either a killer scaler in your cable box or sat box, and/or a great scaler in the plasma itself so that HD content is treated properly, and not processed into eye-crossing junk on the screen.

ps.... CBS will show its debut of the new HD-NFL broadcast in 1080i tonight. Make sure to check it out... it should make Fox and NBC's HD feed look like poop by comparison.

Yep... I knew you weren't arguing I was just agreeing with your position that this display can't present true 1080 HD. I also agree completely with your statement that if it looks good to the eye and wallet of the purchaser, that is all that matters. For a self-proclaimed lowtech/notech, you still 'get' this stuff pretty well and a right-on the money. BTW, your Sony is still considered an excellent display even though the list of the best new-and-improved displays changes monthly these days. Won't be long before you are watching it again. I hope we can get up the hill before you 'fly south'.
Have a great weekend.
