Palm 700P turning out to be fun.

I said i would give an update on how the 700P experience is going so here are a few thoughts.

While i did finally get it to work with bluetooth there are some volumn issues that will hopefully be solved with a firmware upgrade. The Phone does suffer from low volumn on it's own which was solved with a prc called Volumn care.

But the fun came when I bought the little adaptor that you have to have to use iPod ear phones.(They should have included it but I had to buy it for $10.00) Once I did that i started downloading songs into the 700P which was very easy. So the MP3 player sounds great. But the real fun came when I booted up the web and went to a site called io2go which is a collection of online radio stations. http://www.radioio.com/io2go/ Being a Jazz fan I found this streaming Jazz radio station and it played on the treo without a hitch. Oh yes we are lovin the querty keyboard. Very convienent for sending text messages. So far so good.

In a passing conversation I heard one of the tech's in the SF palm store mention that problems occur when people try to use software from the 650 that they believe will work on the 700P. There appears to be a bit of a difference with the buttons and the OS between the 650 and the 700P and that causes problems. I am still learning the ropes though so i take very careful steps in my learning curve making sure any included software is written for the 700P. Maybe I'll watch some TV using MOBITV. http://mobitv.handmark.com/?r_id=ggl_mobitv

Good writeup Barry. I installed the VolumeCare a few months ago and it works pretty good. Not sure why the volume is so low on the 700p, and VolumeCare could be louder IMO. I've streamed a lot of radio too and played MP3; especially at work so I won't tie up my company's network.

I've been thinking about dong the TV mod, but not sure I can justify the $10/month. Feelfree to be the guinea pig and if all goes well, I may give it a try.

I agree with you. Couldn't live without the Treo 650 last year and this year, wouldn't do without the Treo 700p. However, we need that firmware update to help with the "speed" of switching apps and help with the BT drivers. Otherwise, it is a great Smartphone!!

don't know if a firmware update will help with the speed of switching between apps because i think it has more to do with Versamail than the OS. For whatever reason, Versamail slows the whole system down. when I had Versamail installed, the 700p would stall quite often, but after I removed the program, it rarely stalls. I think Versamail just uses a lot of system resources and not sure if a firmware will remedy that. The issue I had with the 700p was with the caller ID showing up on the MID. Instead of showing the current caller, it would show the last caller's ID...there were times when I thought it was my fiancee calling, say "hey baby", only to realize that it was a client or a guy. talk about embarrassment. I ended up getting a cradle that clipped to the center A/C vent so that I could see who's calling w/o having to grab the phone.

Hmmm Interesting. Never had any trouble with Versamail slowing anything down but i have seen one other user who had the Caller ID problem you mentioned. Did you get it sorted out??

haven't gotten the caller ID problem sorted out yet. I think what happens is when a call comes in, it doesn't show up in the call log; however instead of linking the current call screen to the bluetooth, they link the last call on the call log. As for the Versamail, when it's installed, you'll notice that when you push the phone button (the button to the left), the whole top line (where it says "Verizon Wireless") takes a second or 2 to appear, whereas, when it's not installed, it appears instantly. I've had a lot less freezes now that I've removed Versamail.

be careful with the earphone plug. its a known issue they WILL go bad and they will make your phone think there's a plug in at all times, rendering regular phone use/speaker phone useless.

i had one replaced under warranty and now refuse to use any headphone plug in devices because that is a known weakness of the treo. as i understand it, that weakness is still there in the newer 700 and 750 designs as well.

the BEST thing about the treo i like is the ability to tether to a laptop. i now have wireless internet access with my laptop anywhere my treo has data signal, especially at the desert racetracks i go to frequently... just uses my unlimited data plan. the 700+ series will give you better connection speeds. the 650 is limited to 56k or about... but better 56k then nothing at all right?
