Who cares? It doesn't stop anyone from using a different web browser.

From an OS design point of view it makes sense to have a centralize HTML rendering engine instead of each application having it's own. It makes for less code and a more consistent appearance across applications.

Easy there gents... explorer.exe (used by the applets that i mentioned) is different from iexplore.exe (which is the browser)... but nice try :) :) LOL!

I was referring to the sharing of HTML rendering services by applications like Outlook and Word. They both rely on IE to show HTML content.

Less code is relative to even more code. Everyone knows Windows is a code pig. It would be even more of a pig if it wasn't the use of common libraries and services.
