Well, in order to have help with the family, if/when a family had a girl, they (sadly, and unfortunately) mostly gave up the girl. This is why there are millions of Chinese girls in orphanages waiting to be adopted (and why you see so many adopted Chinese girls in America). What has happened is that the ratio of women-to-men will be heavily skewed toward the female side.
