Opinons on the PS3???

To the lucky people that already have one, what are your opinons on the "next-generation" video gaming system? I'm planning on getting one this weekend but I have heard mixed reviews about the system.

The negative things that I have heard is that the games aren't up to par yet because the developers need more time on them for the PS3 and it generally takes up to a year afterwards for the better games to come out.

The controllers non-existent battery compared to the competition.

The good things I heard were that the blu-ray DVD player is nothing less than great and for $600 it is the cheapest player out.

And I guess the potential of the system.

Should I spend the money are pass?

Got the PS3 60GB version...

I bought the PS3 mainly to be used as a BluRay movie player and it does a great job!

And I enjoy the following extras when in the living room:
- Web browser
- Viewing photos

As for games, I have not owned any other game console since I was in 3rd grade so can't really comment on the game quality... I did buy the NBA '07 game and noticed that the graphics is really nice and the games takes advantage of the remote controller...

WAIT!

That's all I'm going to say if you are planning on buying one. Sure, you can walk into any store right now and see one on the shelf... can the same be said for a Wii? Nope. At least not the stores I've walked in or people I've been talking to. I am a huge PlayStation fan and would love to eventually get a PS3. As of right now, I'm in no hurry considering Sony is being a bunch of asses regarding the Immersion lawsuit (the reason there is no vibration with the new bluetooth controls), the games are still lacking, and there are still plenty of bugs to work out.

In the long run, I think Sony will come out on top of the 360 and Wii, but right now, it's totally getting PWN3D.

After a month and a half of owning one, I still play it almost every day. I would agree that the games need to catch up a bit compared to the 360. Madden 07 is terrible and I'd rather play the PS2 version. I really like the controllers and the fact that there's no battery. Its significantly lighter and works almost as good as my wireless Logitech I had for PS2. I never cared much for vibration and would rather have Bluetooth and WiFi anyway.
Its absolutely amazing as a BluRay player though. Movies look great, but its too bad that only certain distributors will put movies out in this format. You'll have to use DVD format for the non BluRay. I think its worth the price just based on it being a BluRay player.
I do hope that eventually Sony will make it lighter, it weighs a ton!!!

But when it comes to playing shooter games or racing games (Gran Turismo series), vibration is a very nice sensory aide to have.

If you are a Playstation fanboy you must get it. I think it has the potential to be the best system to date. If you look at this logically then you should wait. The video game industry is based on volume. Many people forget that we get the consoles at or below cost. Which means the companies are taking a loss for every one sold. They make their money on the games. Developers want to create games for systems that have high sales volume. The industry has proven over and over that the best hardware does not necessarily win (Xbox vs PS2 for example). PS3 is not selling right now which is very bad for long term success.

Don't buy it for BluRay unless you are in the market for a BluRay player. Why? Because BluRay and HDDVD are fighting right now and we have no idea on who will win. If BluRay loses and PS3 doesn't sell, you will have wasted your money. Also check to see if the movies you want to watch are on BluRay.

Just like XBox 360 the games won't be good until a year later (next Christmas). I also think that is when the PS3 will take off. Just imagine when a killer game is released and if the price is slightly lower ($600 is a sticker shock for most people).

I am in the same boat as you. I am ready for a new console but I don't know which one to get. I currently have an Xbox and a Gamecube. After thinking about it, I've decided to get a PS2. That's right, the previous generation. The funny thing is, is that I can't find it in stores. It has been the best seller all year (and all Christmas) long. I should have bought one years ago but I liked Xbox better. At $129.99 I can get the PS2 today and wait for the PS3 to come down.

I'd wait also. I have been tempted after seeing them back on store shelves but $600 is a huge price to pay. The games will get better with time and the price will come down even if it is only $50 or $100. If you don't have to have the latest and greatest right now then hold off.

I'm waiting impatiently for a Wii. I want one more now that I can't have one. I know it's not as good as the 360 or PS3 in terms of graphics but the interactive nature of the Wii looks so cool. Anyway, I still play games on the PC platform so I'm covered for now.

Flashback: I dug out my old Playstion just for kicks. It is the original before they numbered them. It was really sad. I think the whole shebang is going on eBay. :tsk:

I will probably pick up a PS3 when GT5 comes out, as well as Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry, and probably the next GTA game... other than that, I'm pretty happy still with PS2 considering God Of War 2 comes out this March, and Mortal Kombat and Guitar Hero kick ass on it as well.

I am a huge gamer... I got lucky and got a PS3 pre-Christmas. The games suck. However if you have not watched a blu ray dvd on a 1080p TV, you can't even begin to understand how amazing the quality is.

I prefer the wireless battrery system of the 360.. I don't like the idea of having to recharge the controllers and it looks bad with all the wires sticking it out of it necessary to plug in the controllers.

But hey, your going to get it anyway.. You might as well go get it now.
