Download Speeds
When I'm browsing, my download speeds for files always seem to go down some. We're suppose to have 6mb of downstream bandwidth here with Comcast, so what gives?

check the speed with your antivirus and firewall on and then do the same without them

Try this site for checking your speeds. It's a more robust test IMO. Just pick download>Smartest

I just did SG's test site:
DwnLoad: 44.9Mbps Upload : 359 Kbps Whatever the hell the numbers mean...I'm on ComCrap's superduper connection, fwiw. I've run the "speed tests" on occasion and find they vary all over the map. And, just ran Alpac's site for a result of: 3002 Kbps |
www.speakeasy.net is always reliable.
just a point of order here, any site that registers "speed" is never dead on. the best way to use them is to let them test your connection and use that first test as a baseline. Then on subsequent tests compare the results. Obviously there is a problem is you're supposed to get say 8Mb and you get 3, but overall don't get overly concerned with a 1-2Mb/s variance. |

Happens to me too Vinuneuro. Is it a big drop in dl speed? How many files are being downloaded and what is your total dl speed?
For every packet you receive your BTclient has to send out an "OK got it" before the next packet is sent out. So if you are using up most of your bandwidth on the dl side and then browsing around using up the rest of it you'll end up in a never ending queue with your torrent client constantly waiting for a ping! slowing the whole process down. Hope this answers your question. |
I get 2637.4 kbps - DSL pro ATT/Yahoo
|
Well, torrents don't work like that. The maximum upload speed is based upon your upload speed and everyone else's upload speed. You usually wont get more than 1mbps. If you want to test file download speed, download something from the microsoft site here
|
Most ISP's will also cap your bandwidth if they see a steady stream (they realize what you're doing and don't want you to hammer their other customers on the same "pop)

Speakeasy Test
Speakeasy gave me these results:
3152kbps Download 607 kbps Upload DSL Pro Service |
10169 Kbps or 10.2 Mbps DL
Cablevision Optimum |
Wow!

Interesting site...hadn't tested speed since I moved into verizon FIOS land... download at 21.24 mbs upload at 1.8 Mbs Speakeasy shows me at 3084 kbps down, 1837 kbps up. Not bad. It's been fairly reliable too. |
