Wanna buy an openMoko?

The $300 Linux-Powered 'iPhone Killer' Arrives After seemingly endless delays, the OpenMoko phone is here. The first version of the NEO 1973 mobile phone, which carries the Linux kernel inside and is not locked to a specific network. http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/20...nux-power.html

Looks interesting.

It seems to be less an "iPhone killer" and more like a cellphone monopoly killer. The beauty of the device is the open platform and the ability to run on any GSM network.

However, it's made and marketed by FIC, which is a relatively small-time Taiwanese electronics company better known for its mobos and graphics cards. Asus and Acer are way bigger players, have deeper pockets, and bigger distribution channels, but can't even make a dent in markets outside of Asia aside from their PC component sales. For FIC to make the Neo1973 a mainstream phone is a stretch IMHO, unless they sell it off to a cellphone maker with some clout, like Motorola as an example. I think it ends up as a niche phone for the hacker community, much like the PPV6700.

If anything, they should get Keanu Reeves as a spokesperson...

it would be handy to have something like this that would also work on CDMA networks as that is the best coverage in the US currently

CDMA is soon to be obsolete, buddy. 4G GSM (MUCH better than any staticky Verizon crap) is coming soon.
