When will the chest beating ever stop?

Wagner 09-12-2007 03:28 PM

Apparently never, just keep building bigger weapons for whatever reason.....yet in every major 'conflict' troops are always sent in. That's right, the oldest form of warfare is always used. Makes all this crap kind of pointless.

My bomb can blow up the world 5 times over, while yours can only blow it up 3 times. :nanana:

Thank you for your correct conclusion.

It's not "pointless". The companies that manufacturer these huge bombs are making lots of money, and they give enormous campaign contributions to those making the spending decisions. ;)

Wagner 09-12-2007 09:11 PM

Wow, so you've been to China, Japan, Russia, both Koreas, Pakistan, India and the other countries that build these types of weapons..or are you just speaking from what you saw in a wiki?

Quicksilver 09-12-2007 09:45 PM

Eric:

That's what makes it pointless. If they indeed give those contributions as you say; then they give enormous campaign contributions to those making the spending decisions on one side then turn around and give enormous campaign contributions to those making the spending decisions on the other side. Conclusion? Pointless, stupid, and any other negative adjective you would like to attach to it.

90% of the weapons like this are built for the US government. Our government spent more on military last year than all the other countries of the world put together, and more than 10 times as much as any other single country. We spend about a hundred times more than Iran and North Korea put together.

So no, I don't think the military hardware manufacturers really care too much about sales in these other countries, as the amount of money they represent is insignificant. Russia may be slightly significant as I think they spend about $40 billion per year on military. Japan also spends a similar amount. By contrast, we spend more than $700 billion of our tax money on military.

The other countries you mention spend reasonable amounts to secure that they have a proper defense of their homeland. We, on the other hand, spend rediculous amounts. And what I posted above explains why our politicians choose to do so. The other countries simply try to keep up the best they can, as I'm sure many of them are affraid that they will be the next Iraq unless they develop some kind of weapons that will discourage such an action by the US.

Pointless? I don't think so. Genius? That would be a better adjective.

Results from such spending? A $700+ billion defense budget. Sounds like good results to me.

Money well spent:
