Grapevine Closed ...... Snow

The Highway Patrol is closing Interstate 5 over the Tejon Pass because of heavy snow.

BAKERSFIELD -
The closure is set for about 5 p.m., and comes after a non-injury accident. Officers handling the wreck decided it would be safer to shut the freeway completely.

Southbound traffic is stopped at the bottom of the hill near the Grapevine exit.

There is no estimate of when it will reopen. Residents in the area reported several inches of snow near the summit.

According to this news source those roads are not closed today.

"Highways in areas hit by the storm have not been closed today,
as Caltrans workers have continued storm patrol service,
checking roadways and working in areas that need to be cleared, Cruz said."

Not all Americans. I've lived in places that didn't have the luxury of shutting down since we'd have shut down the town for 3 months of the year. Where I live (Colorado), if the snow is below your axle, you're going to school and work.

This is California we're talking about. Major snow storms on the I-5 are not even a yearly occurence. Private motorists and commericial carriers do not carry chains, let alone know how to chain up. It's not so much the cars that Caltrans worries about, it's the truckers.

Ever try putting a set of chains on a twin screw tractor with a set of doubles on the back of your tractor? I have. It's not a skill you retain without repetition.

In the Rockies or the Siskyous or anywhere else where adverse weather conditions exist year in and year out, drivers retain this skill.

It was in the 70's last week and I was wearing shorts on the golf course. Now that is California.

Don't forget to mention the 30 degree downward slope in the grapevine on the I-5. That is what makes snow on this part of the fwy dangerous. I've seen some weird weather there where it is Bright, clear and sunny, then all of the you sudden fog so thick It literally compares to the movie Independence day. I've also driven through some crazy pouring rain at night where the lightning storms that are so low you feel as if you can touch them.

It's the global warming!

I don't know the road, but just how steep is the Grapevine? It isn't 30 degrees, which is 58%. Wiki lists it at 6%, which is just over 3 degrees. Apparently the old road, which was replaced by the I5, had some sections that were 7%. I have driven 12% grades on highways, but they aren't common.
