So whole stack replaced in 645.
Russel BMW changed out the electronics in my 645 yesterday (in just 5 hours, amazing). Apparently they replaced a series of computer hardware components per BMW's request. I asked why BMW was so eager to replace such expensive internals without troubleshooting. Well the tech told me it is a little know fact that there is a TSB issued regarding the computer/iDrive components in the 6. Not sure which other models use the same components.
Once again, props to Russel BMW. |
You might have posted this somewhere else.... but what was "wrong" with the 645? I have an 07 525 so I'd be curious to hear about any electrical issues?
My wife was in a store last week and with the key in her purse the trunk opened.......... during a HUGE rain storm. It was only open for a couple of minutes and luckily I had a rubber trunk mat that collected most of the water but about 1/2" of water was in the spare tire well. The genius BMW engineers located the TPM module in the bottom of that same well. Needless to say the TPM malfunction light went off. I pulled everything out, dried the circuit board with a hair dryer and to my surprise all of the errors went away. Not the best place to locate electronics IMHO. |
There would be sporadic loss of iDrive, iPod adapter, Bluetooth problems. Along with that there would be sensor failures in the sunroof and with Active Steering. Apparently it is all wired via fiber-optics and issues arise killing everything.

Sounds like a good dealer and stories like this convince me more not to want to own these cars out of warranty

its good to have a competent dealer!
how many inches of rubber did you, erm, lose on your 335 loaner ;) |

I've read numerous posts about that light coming and going but the box the circuit board is in was full of water this time. I'm just glad the dryer did the trick......... I'd hate to see the repair bill otherwise.

08WhtX5 - Never, ever, ever, ever, ever own a BMW not under warranty. I'm not about to pay the $110/hr * 5 labor charge...let alone the G's they spent on the electronics. One of my good friends bought a 2002 540 that looked perfect, all dealer maintained perfect records..no warranty. Less then 6 months in the entire heating assembly in the car went up. |

These new cars are great but I just can't imagine anyone trying to keep them running like the older BMWs. |
