Aka is an extended stay suit hotel. It sounds like what you are looking for.

Just make sure that they finished the renovation work on the indoor pool.

They have nice new rooms and relatively low rates.

I think they have a three day minimum stay, depending on occupancy.

Good location nice place, you could spend a lot more but not much less.

I have eaten at the place next store (part of the property) and it was real nice.

I occasionally go into NYC for a couple of nights with my family so we can get the "city experience". Two strong recommendations:
1. make your reservation as far in advance that you can because the hotels often fill up! A hotel that is acceptable and is not too expensive is the Shelburne Murray Hill.

I think SF is almost neck and neck with NYC hotel rates. I stayed at the St. Regis in SF last year and it was something like $1500 a night for a suite. Great hotel btw.

Again, I haven't been to NY for quite a long time so forgive my ignorance of the NY areas, but I typically would like to stay somewhere nice near shopping (for the wife).

I'm probably going to book through AMEX Centurion travel but they aren't really much help.

all can either be very high end or very cheap

btw- i'm assuming that your next question might involve restaurants :) There are over 1000 in NYC. You can eat at a different restaurant every night for a year and not eat at the same one twice.

He coming with his wife, kid and sister my guess is that he is not looking for high end.
