Late to the party for this one but my only thought is..... she had to know any kind of body metal was going to set off the alarm. So why put yourself in this position? It just seems to be asking for trouble at some point. Perhaps it could have been handled differently but why let it come to that?

For example...My wife use to wear costume jewelry thru the security gates all the time until the TSA got employed. After the 2nd flight and alarm after alarm she decided to pack her jewelry in a small bag to avoid the problems. She recognized that somewhere along the line it was going to hold up going thru the gate so why not make it easy for all concerned.

Weather a person agrees with body decoration or not is not the issue. Everyone knows how difficult it can be to get thru security considering the climate of airline security. With that in mind a few questions come to mind.

Why would a person make it difficult for themselves to pass thru security?
Wouldn't it be prudent to be prepared for problems before they occur?
Why be difficult when ask to comply with the removal of the items if they fall within the guidelines of TSA compliance.

The logical conclusion in my mind is that this passenger could have done more to prevent this from happening.

There is also the question of what this passengers attitude was during this process. Attitude often determines how others will respond to any given situation but even under the most challenging situations a mild temper usually wins the day. Especially when it comes to dealing with people who have been given a measure of authority.

In the long run it's better to let these self appointed chest beating Robo cops have their 10 minutes of glory rather that give yourself a bad day.

She could have and should have handled it differently. She could have told them upfront. None of us know what her attitude was which as someone else mentioned would surely impact how she was treated. Does she fly frequently, did she even realize it? Who knows, maybe she did it intentionally.

However, what risk do nipple rings pose that they needed to be removed prior to boarding the plane? I'm allowed to have my tweezer in my pocketbook and that's sharp enough to cut someone's jugular vein.

You ask why would you taken hidden/hard to remove metal objects through a metal detector...because they were hard to remove.

What size are the breasts in question?

It's not the nipple rings they're concerned about. They needed to be removed so they could positively identify that it was indeed the nipple rings causing the detector to go off, and not a pair of suicide boobie-bomb implants. In other words, what if they didn't make her take them out and she was a suicide bomber with bombs as breast implants and she blew up the plane? Security did what they had to do in this case now that I think about it this way...

Everybody knows that only happens in the movies.

Why are only the people in authority held to a common sense standard?
I think common sense would lead one not to take metal objects through a metal detector.

My heartburn with stories like this is if TSA, or whatever offending authority is inept, as everyone seems to think after an incident like this. Why put them in a position to make a decision?

Some people actually have metal objects inside their body. Various kinds of surgery such as joint replacements and others. That is why the security people have these small hand-held metal detectors that they can run over different sections of your body to see what is causing the problem. She should not have been treated any differently than someone who had a hip replacement, or would that person have been asked to remove it too?
