I love speed. I was the fastest runner in elementary school through high school. i gave up running my sophomore of high school when i got my drivers license. i used to race my dads Nissan Maxima every chance i got. In college i got a motorcycle (Yamaha 750) which I rode like a mad man. I retired it when i graduated and moved back to the city. After 5 yrs of not having a motorized vehicle I bought a 1995 Porsche 911 Cab. I once drove it from Easthampton to the West Village (100 miles) in 56 mins (top speed 152 mph). Recently my girlfriend and i drove my 2005 4.4 X to Niagra falls. We decided to make it a leisurely 2 day 500 mile trip on the way there. On the way back, we woke up at 530am and started the 420 mile return trip. For most of the way there was no traffic to speak of (top speed 130mph). I covered 420 miles in 4 hours and 4hrs 45 mins. I would love to hear stories from anyone else who is obsessed with driving at high speeds.

peacemf 06-24-2008 09:11 AM

lol
crazy stuff
fastest ive gone is 125mph....

yeah but it consumes sooo much fuel, i pretty much saw half a tank just disappear......
you know what would be cool, is seeing what an x5 looks like at that kinda speeds (from another cars point of view)....

and its really really dangerous , hopefully i'll never do those kinda speeds again.. doesnt matter how big the car is, you watch those safety crash tests and realise that those results are only done at LESS THAN 50mph!!!!!! :( imagine what would happen at 3 times those speeds!

cmyX6go 06-24-2008 09:15 AM

You should go track the X if you like to drive that fast. I'm no priest but no matter how careful YOU are, sh*t happens. People do stupid stuff. If you wipe out at those speeds, you're toast.

Climbs off soapbox

E61Silver 06-24-2008 09:20 AM

Going fast say 80 to 100 on LIE at night with little traffic is no problem, except for the cops. Waving in and out to get around the jerks going slow is much more risky. Waving in and out on a bike is much more risky.

i agree with you but i have a problem. an alcoholic knows he shouldnt drink but he does it anyway. 30 yrs of driving, zero accidents. perhaps my first will be my last.

totally agree with you. i never weave in and out of jerks. usually the left lane clears for me. successfully driving at high speeds requires a high level of anticipation. i always expect someone to do something stupid and have no problem tapping the brakes. i always slow down to normal speeds (80 ish) when passing.

Boston X5 4.4 06-24-2008 09:33 AM

I did over 140mph on a motorcyle on a public highway when I was 17 ....in hindsight, one of the most stupid things that I've ever done, and believe me my stupid list is long.

Or perhaps you'll kill someone else and have to live with yourself, probably in jail.

I'm done posting in this thread. Be careful out there.

i hear you. have you ever driven on the autobahn? i have. driving 100mph+ in zero traffic is no different than doing it on the autobahn. im not one of those crazy kids weaving in and out of traffic, passing on the right, passing on the shoulder etc. when conditions dictate, ie there are no other cars around, its not raining, visibility is good etc i open it up. try it. you'll like it.

u need the stun gun speed limiter......u can get it at best buy... u attach it to u're ipod connector and the electrodes to u're testicles..... The moment a speed of 81mph is reached on the odometer a small voltage is released... if u still get a hard on then u have a serious problem

that didnt look like a empty highway on the clip with your girlfriend driving , and that 3 lane hopping over taking is not responsable driving if you ask me
.

Thats a accident waiting to happen

peanuto 06-24-2008 10:56 AM

yeah but you're forgetting about the things you can't account for... shear a tire anywhere near that fast and your x5 will be like a tumbleweed in a hurricane

Yes, of course!!! How could we be so dumb as to not take our vehicles well above and beyond limits of the law and put ourselves in the position where one wrong move by our own fault, somoene elses, or a plain mechanical failure would kill us??? How can we be so blind

We get it, and I think most of us hope that someday YOU get it, before you kill someone.

So in 30 years no accidents, congratulations, will you still be thumping your chest with pride if tomorrow is your unlucky day and you kill someone? What will you tell their family? bad luck? that you've had a 30 year "hot streak"? I'm sure that that will comfort them.

we do get it. We just go to tracks or Germany to drive at speeds like that.

Vincenzo Veyron 06-24-2008 11:15 AM

for some reason you folks have confused speed with death. more people are killed by drunk drivers, people on cell phones, people driving too SLOW, and a whole host of other distractions that have nothing to do with speed. When i am driving i am 100% focused on the road. I wish i could say the same of the people ive seen on the news that were drunk or on cell phones traveling at or above the posted speed limit.

Thunder22 06-24-2008 11:20 AM

then whos to say these are the drivers that are not 100% focused on there driving that suddenly change lanes in front off you .

What i think you dont get is that your doing this on public highways empty or not ,if you feel the need for speed get a hobby on a race track

E61Silver 06-24-2008 11:23 AM

I think the issue is when you mix car moving at 60 to 70 with someone going 100 you have a greater chance of accident.

I also question the point of this thread, what are you looking for the group to do:

1) Say thats great have fun and drive fast?

2) Convince you that you should change your driving style?

3) Forward this thread to the local PD?

AzNMpower32 06-24-2008 11:28 AM

I thought folks were supposed to slow down to minimise fuel consumption in today's reality of high fuel prices.

The folks on this forum aren't saying that speed kills. It's simply when someone decides to drive recklessly, and then some other person pulls out in front of you doing 70mph. Many interstates in the US do not have good sightlines, especially for higher speeds. You could be perfectly fine doing 105mph and then around the next bend, someone pulls out and BAM!

No matter whose fault it is (in this case, yours for reckless driving), you all lose.

What was the point of sharing your story anyways? :tapping:

i get what you are saying and agree. ive stated several times that i am a defensive driver. i slow down anytime i approach ANY other drivers. im assuming THEY are the idiots and are likely to do something stupid. my track record speaks for itself. 30 yrs of driving. No accidents. You folks have a nice day.

beekbmwm3 06-24-2008 11:48 AM

Interesting topic and many viewpoints...

I myself drive fast in my M3 on a daily basis, I'm a safe driver but that's not saying something could happen at any moment. I've been 152mph in my M3...before you jump to accuse me...it was on my way home from college, on a highway where I could see 20 miles in front of me and a couple miles behind me, I was alone in the car and there was not a car in sight, it was a clear blue day on a highway (midway down a hill so I could see the entire 20 miles). I enjoy driving fast BUT don't do it when someone is around or in my car. You can tell me I'm wrong to do it but if I crash (on the highway going 152mph) the only person that is going to die is myself. I enjoy driving fast and testing the limits of my car but I do it when there is not a person in sight.

As far as your girlfriend's driving, it's crazy and stupid, plain and simple. Weaving in a out of traffic is asking for an accident and passing in the right lane is VERY dangerous. I hope she changes her ways and doesn't hurt herself or others.

dmlgc 06-24-2008 12:15 PM

I drive fast when I think it's safe(ya subjective), just came back from vacation to Arizona from California. On the stretch of interstate 10 that runs through the Mojave desert I did 100 most of the way.

I agree weaving in and out of traffic is dangerous , I don't agree just because you go above the speed limit you're driving dangerous. If that were true any who goes 26 in a 25 would be considered dangerous.

thx for sharing those stories. if you read the post that started this thread the sharing of other "speed" stories is what i asked for.

I get ya bro, I myself love to drive fast. I hate when it says it should take me 1 hour 45 minutes to get somewhere, I take it as a personal challenge to get there in half the time or less if possible. Here are some of my top speeds achieved...

Yamaha R1 - 178
Yamaha Raptor 700(ATV) - Appx. 85 to 90 mph
Cousins Dinan 04 M3 - 160
My X5 - 140
100 meter dash in high school LOL - 10.9 (still a school record)

im the same way. it was supposed to take me 7 hrs and 30 mins to get home from niagra. my drving enthusiast friends were impressed that i made it back in 4hrs and 45 mins. takes alot of focus to drive at that level for that long. whered you do 140 in the X? you rockin a 4.4 or 4.8?

very impressive 100 meter dash time! LOL

streetsoffire 06-24-2008 12:54 PM

Vin Veyron: I made the trip to Niagara Falls also in my X not too long ago.....and yeah on some stretches I was over 135 for extended periods of time (hell the nav unit even clocked me at 143 a few times).......so if you ever see an Estoril Blue X, that sits low with wheels and a killer exhaust note and Jersey plates ------- the race is on.......

peacemf 06-24-2008 12:55 PM

i am always careful and will continue to be. that video was originally posted on youtube so that i could show her friends what a maniac she had become. i forwarded her a few of the comments made here today. hopefully she will get the difference between wreckless driving and speed. the beeping was a radar detector.

For what it is worth: (btw I think it is funny to say wreck-less driving)

Reckless Driving

(n) Driving a vehicle in a precarious manner without paying attention to circumstances prevailing there and the rules in force totally disregarding the possible consequences of such driving with or without his full presence of mind is termed as reckless driving.

Scottie 06-24-2008 01:26 PM

well I will be honest, whether it was right or wrong of me, the fastest I've driven is 145mph (GPS roadpilot speed) in a 4x4.

The fastest I've driven in a car is 138mph and the reason I know it was that speed was because I had one of those output things fitted to my subaru that when you pressed different buttons and it gave all different types of readings.

The best sensation of speed I get is when I never break the national speed limit but I am in my Mini and we are driving the twisty roads.

Tainui 06-24-2008 01:38 PM

Vince - I hear ya 100%. Sometimes when the road clears and there is nobody around it's nice to burn off the carbon buildup on the valves.

Best in the X is only 120 or so (indicated)...but that is a rare occurrence.

I had a 2004 zx-10R which I saw 106 indicated in 1st gear but that thing used to vibrate so much at speed that I never looked down over 160 (indicated).

I still have my zx-12R, which I rode out in Wyoming (where you could see the future and the past its such a long vista), and that bike saw an indicated 190+. I hit the rev limiter on the top of 6th and held it just shy for a few miles or so. It was AMAZINGLY CALM at that speed. Like an air pressure bubble forms around you and everything just smoothes out. All you hear is the wind. Did it, loved it and still have the T-shirt.

Something happened in the past three or four years and I just don't get the rush anymore. I find myself sitting on the cruise control at 75 or so.

I know what you mean and remember the high.

Be safe.

Tainui 06-24-2008 01:40 PM

FWIW - my best friend lived in New Rochelle (off 95 exit 16) and I made it (thanks to the ZX-10R built in lap timer) from his house to my apartment in Manhattan on 79th/York in 16 minutes. :wow:

That's how we used to roll and damn it was fun.

Ajogu 06-24-2008 02:04 PM

Ok, nice read. Now I'm thinking that you being 42 yrs old and lovin these speeds without saying you've tracked cars is weird. I mean, I would expect you to pursue your cravings on a track and hit some great times, right?

Now, I have the advantage of using the autobahn quite often and my X clocked 240kph (148mph), but there was no dangerous overtaking, because I wasn't the fastest on the road:D Your girlfriend's driving was a bit uncalled for not to mention posting it on youtube.

I sold my X5 and got an M5 which is a speed demon. I, however have not hit it's top speed because I love how she handles at "lower" speeds and play around with traction. I guess, what I'm trying to say is that wreckless driving at high speeds is dangerous. PLEASE BE CAREFUL.

GUINNESS 06-24-2008 02:06 PM

Wow... you guys speeding and setting world record times from point A to point B are so cool. In fact, I may just remove myself from X5world because I am not cool enough to be on the same board as you guys.

Now seriously, you want a fuckin cookie?????? Go to the damn track and don't feed the bullshit of A) there are none around you or B) you can't afford it. Actually, no, don't go to the track... you'll probably get more of a hardon trying to set the land speed record from your house to the track location instead of focusing on why you went to the track in the first place.

And why on earth did this even get past 10 posts and already up to 60?????

Any Moron, Jackass, Stupid Fucker, dipshit, clueless prick, asshat, prick, can drive fast in a straight line on an open highway late at night.
It takes no skill, no ingenuity, no brains, no training and the only balls required is the set that is willing to cut a check to their lawyer when they get locked up for being a horse's ass.
- And if you're unfortunate enough to kill or hurt someone, then we will all look forward to you posting from prison and telling us about the flavor of syrup they made you use when you tossed your roommates salad.

You want to have some serious balls, have some serious fun, learn a thing or two about things like Terminal Velocity, Threshold Braking, Trailing Throttle Oversteer, High and Low percentage passing, etc. Then get off the highway and go to racing school.

If you can afford a legal team to defend yourself for being a dumbass, you can afford a racing school.
And guess what, when you are done with the school, you can actually do some real racing, with race cars, and other racer drivers..

You want some adrenaline, try to catch me.

While I think you're a bit dramatic, I do agree with you.

Been there and done that too. loved it.

It could be that going to the track is what slowed me down on the street. I did skip Barber in Elkheart Lake and did a Viper meet at Phoenix International. Great bunch of guys and excellent instruction.

I also did Penguin Race school up in New Hampshire and countless open track days on the ZX-10 at Poconos (FUSA course was my fav).

Once you go to the track you will never be the same!

Be safe.

thx for posting. earlier this morning i was feeling like a freak or something. i knew there were other people that enjoy speed. my only 2 cars have been a 911 and the x5. i didnt buy either so that i would look "cool" i bought both them because i was impressed by the performance of each.

B-Line 06-24-2008 03:13 PM

Again Scottie,

Anyone can drive fast in a straight line. There is no skill at driving at 140mph in a modern, fast car. (actually, I take it back, the most important skill is understanding how to "look ahead", but I promise you, that saying is worthless without track experience."

- What people do on the autobahn is fine. Driving fast is fine also, based on road conditions, etc.

But trying to set land speed records by zipping on the LIE and trying to make "best time" is just moronic and is an accident waiting to happen.

Considering I grew up at Exit 32 on the LIE, I can comfortably say, I know the road.

I'm sure lots of people drive fast, but maintaining the speed solely for the sake of maintaining it is dangerous. And it's not impressive.

You want to impress me, try to take away my racing line, Apex...

Ha! That's a joke... You don't have a clue what either car is capable of. As I said, any moron can drive a car straight with their foot to the floor.

Just another quote to put in your "Book of DUMB"..

Speed is not 140 mph in a straight line. 140 MPH is NOTHING.. I do that every time I do down the front straight at Willow Springs race track.
Speed, as defined by any one behind the wheel who actually has a clue, is about the quality and quantity of acceleration you are able to input while driving through a fast line. It's also about the quality and quantity of your braking, or rather: your ability to Threshold Brake while Heel n Toe downshifting, while Trailing Throttle Oversteering onto your Apex.

That is speed.

Speed is what happens when you shave 1 second off your lap times, not 10 minutes off your commute home from Atlantic City. Speed is what happens when your smooth, consistent and driving like a well oiled machine.

140 mph in a straight line is about as impressive as doing a bunny hop on a Schwinn. They only thing that's even slightly adrenaline about it, is the fact it's illegal (and stupid for unqualified drivers.)...

I'd be willing to bet you you didn't even take the time to check your tire pressures before your little Cannonball Runs.. "Oh, but why should I check my tire pressures? They feel fine..."....
Or at least tell me genius, what were your cold tire temps and what were you're hot tire temps?

What about your brakes? Did you ever bother to bleed them before your little cross country race?

Call me what you want, big mouth, peasant, etc. It doesn't bother me. What bothers me is jackasses behind the wheel of a machine they have no business driving fast.

Vincenzo Veyron 06-24-2008 04:01 PM

Ahhh, another quote for the book of DUMB...

As far as it not even being worth a serious response, I figured you'd chicken out with a response like that. It was actually a smart decision on your part as we wouldn't want to further embarrass you by using big terms that you might not understand.

P.S. - When you're traveling at those speeds and you hit an uneven road surface that unsettles the rear end of your 911 or X5, just wondering what you do to keep the car loaded?
1) Lift or
2) Brake

Soccerjunky speaks the truth  , and you wanna ban the guy, why, you people are the one's busting his balls. He asked about if anyone drove fast and he got a response about track driving and how its dangerous to drive fast, who the fuck cares about that shit. He asked a simple question if you have ever driven fast post it. not are you track certified or part of neighborhood watch. VV you should have titled your post Warning 95% of X5world may find this offensive....

For such a wealthy and talented individual you show great restraint by living well below your means at least in the cars you claim to own.

Let me with reverence bow to your greatness.

LOL, I wouldn't let you balance my check book. Nor will I turn this into a, I have this, blah, blah, blah and you don't have that, blah, blah, blah.
My life is pretty damned good and there will always be people with less and there will always be people with more. It's not about what you got. It's about the way you use it.

You would impress me much more by telling me what charities you donated to less year, rather than telling me about your trillions of dollars and your ability to "tear up the Long Island Expressway".

The only thing I envy about you is your ignorance, cause I understand it's bliss.

I agree with LabGuy... I can take it or I wouldn't dish it out.. If Vincenzo wants to continue to embarrass himself, that's fine with me. I promise you, he has said nothing that hasn't made me chuckle.

you are correct. there will always be people with more talent (me) and people with alot less (you).

why would anyone waste there time trying to impress a loser? it is YOU that should try and impress ME.

i have accomplished many great things in my life. my obsession with driving fast is certainly not one of them, but a part of my life nonetheless. what have you accomplished? my guess is not much.

Thanks CGSTL, I'd throw back a beer with you anyday. That is of course assuming Vincenzo and all of his trillions of dollars, shouldn't first buy up all the worlds beer manufacturing facility's, in an effort to prevent us from enjoying some spirits together..

This is silly lets stop this and be happy.

I am sure we all love our BMW's and driving fast or slow does not make you a better person.

If you drive fast on the street be careful and don't cut in and out.

If you drive slow please get out of the fast lane.

Chip 06-25-2008 08:57 AM

Hmm... This is getting really serious... so :) :)

Anyways, just a question. If you like to drive fast, why not on a track? There will be no traffic, so you can go even faster. Right?

Fairly interesting thread...

Imo, any/all of us on here, "like" to go fast on occasion.

My only admonishment would be to suggest a truly empty road
or a track, for the 100 mph+ swerving and dodging.

Keep it under a Buck Seventy and between the fences, on empty roads,
where the only casuality for a mistake, is one's own...

GUINNESS 06-25-2008 12:23 PM

So this morning I was heading to work... about half way there I realized I forgot my laptop so I spin around and head back to the house. The road was still fairly congested, but I gotz skillz... so I hammered down and made it home in 7 minutes what usually takes 16. I'm sure I could have made it faster if I ran 1 of those reds.

So check it... I get so distracted while home, I forget the laptop AGAIN. The whole reason I went home in the first place. Anyway, after finally getting the laptop, I dropped the hammer back to work. There is no rush greater than the sound of an S52 straight 6 screaming at 6000 RPM. I was too busy dodging cars that didn't want to get out of my way to know how fast I was going. But man, what a thrill. I had to "take care of business" when I got to work for how amped I was.

Gotta keep it real ya know... on the str33tzz. All this track talk is for ball-less pussies.

You know u r correct,,, i forgot that sanguru could have also helped vince out with his extensive track experience and overall visceral knowledge of cars....BESIDES.... my man crush has shifted to a middle age individual who commutes to the city to a IT job with little chance of advancement.. he has already been thru one failed marriage but still finds it hard to understand why women are not drawn to his quick personality...he is however able to comfort himself by playing video games and jacking off to Gran Turismo ...

mrkbbd 06-25-2008 03:28 PM

Mine's been topped out at 153 (indicated 160), it was like 3am and there was only 1 other car on a straight road, it was a mini-van and we must've scared the sh*t out of him because he was only doing about 55, pretty stupid, but there is always an itching to see what it can do, and now I never have to again. For the record I usually keep it under 80 unless there is no traffic

GUINNESS 06-25-2008 05:15 PM

I love drugs. I was smokin pot in elementary school through high school. i gave up pot my sophomore of high school when i discovered coke. i used to do linesoff my dads Nissan Maxima every chance i got. In college i got a mad hookup which I snorted like a mad man. I retired it when i graduated and moved back to the city. After 5 yrs of not having coke or pot I bought some crack. I once did 10 viles in one day. Recently my girlfriend and i started droppin acid. We decided to make it a leisurely 2 day trip. On the way back down, we woke up at 530am and started doing some lines. I would love to hear stories from anyone else who is obsessed with drugs.

Major04 06-25-2008 05:35 PM

:noadd:

Oh -yes I do! How about the time, we were in Baghdad! My team was going to blow up a building next door at night. It was hot and muggy..couldn't figure out how to work the laser so that the flying Skunk can drop that big a$$ cruiser down the tube. Aircraft was coming in 10mins and we needed to go up the stairs without shooting someone. That would be bad jojo! I started dreaming about my Mustang (Roxanne) going up I-4. We got to a room and heard some noises. We all went to a closet, my staff said "sir, you stink!" I smelled myself and yep, I agreed. We haven't taken a bath in 2 weeks and were in Indian country. We finally, got the laser set-up and blew the building. Then I woke up, full of drugs and my men carried me out. Damn, would you know it I got shot in the leg...Damn to hell! And that my friend is a true story...lost 2 men that night! Drugs or speeding not included.

Quicksilver 06-25-2008 05:37 PM

OK you're starting to get it.

It's difficult telling a friend he has bad breath.

The hard part for the friend with bad breath is admitting that a friend
is pointing out a problem that even though he doesn't know
exist needs to be addressed.

You're move...............
