I listened to a CD!
 

I was cleaning up the house today and found a CD player. I realized I haven't listened to a CD in years. Literally. I always use iPod or radio in the car, and have used iPods since 2003 when I'm out and about.
So, I started listening to the CD in there (it was Don Henley's Actual Miles) and was shocked. The sound quality blasts my iPod away. It's so much richer, and when I listened to the same exact song on both CD player and iPod, the iPod version sounds tinny and flat. I used the same headphones, the ones that came with the CD player. I tried the iPod earphones, and they sucked in comparison.
The unit I have is a no-frills Discman D-121, that, according to the label, was made in January 1994. It's a miracle that both the CD player, CD, and headphones function like new.

It's an interesting experience to not use an iPod. No ID3 tags, no album artwork, no podcasts, no video or movies. Just music, and you are forced to actually listen to it instead of looking for the next song or playing brick. :D

which is probably why the upper end of the aftermarket now has digital "HD" radios and amps to correct (or try to) what is missing from the compression of the music files when using ipods or mp3 discs. The good thing about the digital HD amps is they are more stable and create alot less heat. They're supposedly stackable and need less airflow.

I also find myself using the ipod for everything, but have upped all music on it to the highest 320 bit rate to retain as much sound quality. Its amazing how we migrate from quality to quantity for sheer convenience...

Yep...The same can be said going from LP to CD though I hated the pops from dust and small scratches. The fidelity was much better though. I've got a pretty high end system and I don't bother with the iPod on that system. Only CD's and even then I prefer SACD"s. The Super Audio CD's on a nice system is about the best sound you can get on reproduction. I also have a DVD-Audio player which is also high quality but more cumbersome than the SACD player.

The iPod is for travel and convenience.

Try a lossless format for your music. The ipod is convenient in terms of integration, but it's not known for great sound quality compared to some other players.

Hey! I have one of those...collecting dust

No kidding, :D ...as one of the few here that don't own an Ipod, (though I've listened to hours worth of tunes on my Kidz's), I've been thumping the table for CD quality sound vs. mp3 for a long time. Hellsbells, my ol'custom compilation cassettes sound better than a Ipod, imo.

Not resisting change, simply for the "resistance", I just feel carrying a few custom CDs in the car, or loading up the 5 CD changer at home, is pretty easy. I really like my CD sound. :thumbup:

I use my iPod, because when I use it, I'm running in general. However, in the car, the iPod is a PITA, between the aux cable being pinched in the center console, the "look down to change songs" thing and fiddling with everything else. I just use Sirius.

That said, there is something to going and finding a CD, and putting it in the player...
