Two driving forces: Testosterone and cash consumption.

Lamborghini made tractors. Rich playboy owner buys a Ferrari, has a problem with the car, complains about it, gets dismissed by Ferrari, and so builds a car just to spite them. Testosterone. Then he goes bankrupt.

Iacocca buys them (more testosterone). He wanted an Italian car company for Chrysler. Then they run out of money.

An Indonesian playboy buys them (more testosterone). Then they run out of money (notice a pattern here?).

Audi buys them. They haven't run out of money yet, but stay tuned

Where it all started (and I think the tractors look better than the cars, at least than the Countach. The Miura, on the other hand, was beautiful):

Just wait till the day your kids call Gallardo as ugly and some others car you like as pointless. ;) :)

My favorite Lambo Gallardo red color:
What's wrong with Murciélago LP640?

Let me do it for you now. Exotic sports cars: no motorsport, no point. :)

I can't imagine a reason for anyone buying a Lamborghini over a Ferrari other than the attention that the gaudiness attracts.

Jeff, I'm with you. The tractor looks better, and there's a purpose for it's existence.

Don't know what the driving force is behind the company but I do like the way they look.

It is an interesting story of how they started, changed hands several times and have built some in my opinion amazing looking and performing cars.

If I was lucky enough to be able to buy a car in that range, I'd go for the Ferrari - I've wanted one for years. With each new model I change my mind and want the new one so I guess their marketing is working.

Don't know much about motorsports at that level, who do they really compete with?

Oh man ... brings back memories!

Remember the DeTomaso Pantera:

Count me in as another teenager who had a Countach poster on the wall. Mine was the one with the silhouette of a woman, a bottle of Dom, and the Countach. Pretty pimp, right?

:iagree: with the whole generational thing. It was the epitome of '80's flash and overt consumption. Does a car need scissor doors? No but it sure was cool. The Countach was pretty hot then but looks outrageously dated now. I'm sure there will be cars that we consider hot now that we look back on and scratch our heads. Speaking of heads, just remember that when the Countach was the cat's ass, people thought these looks were good. :tsk: The first one is a young Joe Dirt(é). :D

Even as a teenager in the 80s I hated the Countach. I'd rather have had something German and usable.

So Ferrari has a purpose but Lambo does not?
Are all Ferrari owners using it for motorsports?

Veyron is also pointless than.
