About 2.5 years ago I bought a Stearns and Foster mattress. It was about $2500.

During that time the bed has gotten body indentations on both my side of the bed and my wifes. Now I may be a big guy but my wife is very petite.

The warranty says they only cover the mattress if the body indentations are 1.5 inches. 1.5 inches is a HUGE freaking indentation. The mattress has become such that it is no longer comfortable to sleep on. And I'm not being nit picky.. It's really quite bad.

For that much money, shouldn't I expect that the bed would hold up longer. Should I pursue the manufacturer?

I called the place where I bought it: Mattress Gallery which of course is no longer in business, but there is a new company there that is the exact same called ORTHO Gallery. They say they have bought out Mattress Gallery but are not standing behind Mattress Gallery sales.

Any thoughts on how to handle this.. I would hate to walk away from a $2500 purchase that only lasted 2.5 years.

Can you flip it?

Otherwise, it sounds like you need to make a call to the manufacturer or park your car on it for about a week. That should get you 1.5 inches. :D

It happened to me with a Simmons, when they first came out with the pillow tops. I also paid a few thousand for the mattress. They sent an inspector to measure the indentation. They actually replaced it twice, as it happened to the first replacement within a few months.

Would you happen to have the documents/paperwork (reciepts, warranty, etc) from the store you purchased it from? I guess that will help you out somehow as you pursue the manufacturer for warranty.

If I'm not mistaken, the manufacturer should honor the warranty on their products especially if they deal through licensed shops/distributors even if those stores end up closing.

L, when it happened to you, did you really have 1.5 inches of indentation??
That's huge..

I'm worried if they send an inspector, the indentation might not be that much, if noticeable by measurement at all... I don't think I can see the indentation, I just feel it.

the pillowtop is the issue . I too had a top line S&F.
I replaced it with a Hastens.

BTW, since you are are westcoaster, have you checked out McKroskeys.
I was considering them as well, but it's hard to buy a bed without trying it out 1st...

The bed can't be flipped. It has a solid frame bottom..

We don't have a pillow top..

Here's an interesting story. I always loved soft beds and I always have had a bad back. I got lucky when we went bed shopping last time cause it completely coincided with my back pain.

I actually went to the store and my back was in severe pain.

We tried every bed in the store and the only bed that was comfortable during my back pain was this very, very firm, no pillow top, Stearns and Foster mattress. Normally I would never have considered sleeping on such a hard bed.

But I was in pain, the bed didn't hurt, and I said to my wife, "I think we need to get this one".

And up until recently with this indentation problem, I had been very happy and my back problems had actually gotten much better.

It did take me about two days to get used to sleeping on a hard bed but now, I couldn't imagine sleeping for any length of time on a soft bed. So even though I've considered the memory foam beds, I'm afraid to cause I feel like a firmer bed is the better choice..

It was bad, it was clearly visible. I'm not a light weight petite like your wife but I'm not big. The first inspector didn't even bother with the actual measurements because he could see it. The second time they measured. Pitch a bitch, what do you have to lose?

B- are you sure you can't flip the mattress :confused:

there is a whole ~science~ on beds. For me, I was having trouble sleeping....and I was so desperate to find good sleep, the mattress was getting ruled out as the factor. I even did something I never would consider (acupuncture) and it actually helped. As a matter of fact....it actually turned me towards that moreso than traditional medicine at times.

Anyhow, I went through every bed manuf I could find to find the perfect bed. For me, which Hastens was the last option since they were $$$, but the freaking horsehair bed topper was the winner.

Never did like the way memory foam slept. Heat retention was such a issue.

FWIW, in my research, there was ALOT of bedding enthusiasts the make their own bed. There are places online that sell various foams, and basically they end up making their own *foam bed* with a mix and martch of hard foams layers, and soft foam layers and or *zoned* areas in which certain parts of the body rested on a harder foam vs. softer....

I feel for you on this one. I don't have back issues myself but I work damm hard during the day enough that I know what good sleeping can bring.
Sorry if this doesn't answer you warranty question though.
