I used the Sprint GPS a few times, but I'm used to to GoogleMaps for searching for places, phone numbers etc. I'm hoping the 2.1 update will activate the vocal turn by turn.
|
yeah, there are multiple ways to look up directions and stuff on the go and I use google maps for all that when I'm in the passengers seat. But if I'm gonna be driving and need directions/guidance I use the sprint nav. That way I don't really need to look at the screen, and when I do it is more clear as a nav screen goes, not an ariel view with a line on it.

I actually just tried using it now for my 1st time. It takes forever to load the route, but I bet there are some perks to it over the Google version. I wonder how we can replace the vehicle on there w/ and X5!
|
It can take a minute to load the route, but it is still quicker than my garmin trying to find me to begin with... it takes it quite a few minutes to find me depending on how far I am from where I was when I turned it off. Hell, it took over 4 hours to find me when I took it to Vegas! (thank god for sprint nav then or I wouldn't have found my way to the hotel easily at all)

So I got the 2.1 update yesterday. It changed the way the screens looked, added more apps, voice controlled and talking navigation, etc. Then just now I installed my first custom app via rooting...live wallpapers! I now have this badass fishtank, sun shimmering and fish moving all around, so cool!! There are apparently 100's of different backgrounds...Matrix, starfields, photo album, etc. Other than me learning this damn keyboard, this phone is getting better and better.

Wait... the 2.1 upgrade for my phone is out now?!?!? I thought that wasn't till next month!

Old news brotha ;) The guy at the store had me download an app that was basically useless, but today I used an app called "MyBackup" and it worked perfectly. Ends up I didn't need to backup my phone for the animated wallpapers upgrade, but it still did what was expected. I had too much crap on my SD card, so I mounted and made a copy on my PC's desktop of everything on the card, deleted everything, unmounted and used that app to back everything up from the phone onto my 2GB SD card. I'd do the same before you head to the store just in case the guy there doesn't know anything either. Call before you go as well to make sure they can do it, I had to goto 3 stores (2 corp, 1 franchise) before someone said they can do it. Took all of 15 minutes and I was out the door. I love my new fishtank btw!

Just so I understand, you went to three stores, waited 15 minutes for a download, did more work back on your PC at home, and this was all so that you can have animated fish as wallpaper on your phone?
I have a (BB Bold) cell phone. I made two calls on it today, and checked my calendar for an address. It worked fine. It has twenty or so apps that came with it but which I hid so they don't clutter up my phone, email, and calendar icons. I guess I just don't get it. At least consumerism is alive and well, and will help to pull us out of this recession. |
Nothing better for a recession than the "gotta have it" gadgets!

No no no. I went to the 1st store where I had gotten the phone to ask them about random signal issues that I was having and to complain about the battery life. While I knew battery life w/ this phone being a 1440mAh vs 1600mAh in my Treo, I wanted to see if they'd offer me anything ;) They said to head to the other store a few miles down the road that is a servicing center to have the battery load tested. Once I went there, the guy there told me that 2.1 had finally come out and that another store maybe 3 miles away had the computer do to the upgrade. 2.1 is known to be more efficient, increasing battery life while adding apps and cooler standard features. The animated wallpaper update I did was the 1st time that I've entered the flash more of the phone, but ends up I didn't need to do any backing up of apps since I didn't flash the phone at all, but instead installed a .zip file into the base OS.
I tried BB a while ago, but I didn't like the lack of a touch screen. I realize they have them now, but until now, I've been through 3 Treo's and haven't left them till the Pre made the keyboard even smaller. My current phone isn't cluttered at all. It's quite similar to an iPhone that you can place whatever apps you like on your "desktop", but then I can also slide the screen left or right for a wider desktop. All my other apps are listed in a scrolling type screen, similar to the iPhone, once a hit a little down arrow icon. My desktop has all the most commonly used apps, and scrolling to either the right or left will display widgets for things like a to-do list, calendar, etc for the other things that I use often. I also like that I have a single status bar along the top, showinig all my running apps, battery, time, text, email, apps updates, weather updates, etc in a nice dropdown menu w/o having to close the app I'm in...multitasking on a phone is convenient. I'm just loving this phone for the fact that I didn't have to pay a dime for it. I changed my plan so that both phones now have internet, texting, etc and after my Boeing discount, I still pay under $100 for unlimited everything through Sprint. I've also spend under $15 on eBay to get 3 screen protectors, car charger and an extra battery w/ wall charger. I'm helping Hong Kong more than the US in this recession, but |
