Does Nokia finally (finally!) have a worthy challenger to the iPhone and Android?

A 12 megapixel camera, 720p HD video capture and output via HDMI, 16gb hard drive, expandable to 48gb through mini-SD, free-for-life GPS for car and foot, a capacitive touchscreen (at last!), unified social networking,... I like what I see so far.:)

The announced price is just under $500 U.S. for an unsubsidized phone. For whatever reason, neither AT&T nor T-Mobile have subsidized Nokia's best phones in the U.S. I'm hoping that changes with this phone. If Nokia has truly upgraded their software, we might have another true contender in this one.

Looks cool!

Wow...I really like the phone and though I also have a high end Nikon and HD camcorder I'd like the option to use the phone on the fly. I always have my phone while out and I only take my camera and video device when I plan on going somewhere.

Here is the deal breaker for me...iPhone apps. The apps make the iPhone and there are just too many I use constantly to part with my iPhone for now.

Competition is nice though. It will force Apple to keep up and improve on some weak areas.

It looks like a pretty phone for sure but yet another platform? I think iPhone and Android are going to be tops with Palm's webOS possibly making a run with HP ownership. With Android likely to be common on the upcoming tablets/slates and with Google backing, it will only get stronger. There will be room for Nokia with the brand's popularity in Europe and Asia but it will be very small.

Plus teh GUI looks more cluttered and less "elegant" to me (compared to JesusPhone). But that's just my personal opinion :p:

Good thing you quoted the OP, I mean as the first responder no one would have known who you were talking to :bustingup

That is what might ultimately decide it for me as well. I was a long time Nokia user until the iPhone 3G came out. The apps are what has kept me. The early talk about this new Nokia N8, however, is that the UI will be more "iPhone-like," which some intend as a criticism but I consider it smart thinking. The iPhone is kicking Nokia's ass right now, so they might as well admit it and join the crowd. Especially since Nokia still makes the best mobile phones from a pure phone standpoint and generally still builds the best hardware features, IMO.

So the question now is whether or not nokia was smart enough to let it use open source apps like the android platform did...? That made most of the apps available in the iphone almost immediately available for the droid phones, and would help this nokia play with the big boys.

I've been using both my 650 (work, phone only) and 755p (personal, internet, texting, etc) for years, but I think I'm finally going to upgrade. I'm not willing to wait for iPhone to come to Sprint or pay for their prices when my Treo (albeit smaller screen) can do almost just as much...and has an actual keyboard. I just read about the HP purchasing Treo, so we'll see if things get better. I've had the typical crashes, but as my phone has aged over the years, the crash/resets have decreased to maybe 2-3 a month.

I looked at the HTC Pro Touch 2 (Windows based :() and the Samsung Moment (Android based, which is new to me) and at this point, it's coming down to price. I like that the HTC slides and the screen can tilt up, but even after all my rebates and incentives from Sprint, I don't know if I'm willing to pay 2x as much for tilt and a 1/4 larger screen. I can't stand having to pinch the screen to zoom in and out, but it seems that even the HTC and Moment only work like this...which is what kept me from upgrading from the Treo to the Pre since my Treo gives me a Mobile or Wide option to format the screen and make it all fit w/o the need to zoom, scroll left/right, etc.

I'm on the fence as I don't know what to do, and paying anything more than roughly $100-$150 seems like a total waste when my 755p still gets the job done well...IM, Sprint Mobile Email (manages my 5 email accts, I dont like Outlook), removable battery and SD slot. I was looking on www.phonescoop.com and it appears I can get a Moment for $70 shipped after rebates, which appears to be an upgrade from my 755p. Any opinions?

James, I have the samsung moment through sprint and it has been great! I've never really have any problems with it. It does anything I need it to and has as many apps as the iphone. I was biking down a trail in the woods and decided on the spot to find and download an app that mapped my track on google maps, which worked great and downloaded fast while still in the woods. Worth a look, and they are upgrading the OS in early June. It does enough stuff to make my friends with iphones a little jealous ;)
