Read the AVS Forum and those links posted by CF and NCX...spend some time digging through the topics; (there is no "quick read" or 5 easy pieces on that site, however, lol!)

In the end, buy what fits your need/uses/budget/practical setup space and don't 2nd guess yourself. Asking about LCD vs LCoS vs Plasma, with sub questions on RP vs DV,etc. is like asking for a great stock pick=1000 freaking potentially good answers.

I've spent hours reading/perusing/BM'ing/taking notes on the AVS site and it is enough to make most heads spin...one can find great info/opins there, but the "I chose another brand/type, therefore your pick sucks" gang is at work there, too, imo.

In reality, these higher qual/HD bigger screen TVs have become $1500-5000 appliances and the "history" is not really written for them, yet. But, I would not wring hands or spend months making your pick when you do pull the trigger.

In the old days, lol!, no one tossed a TV...it just got relegated to another room or a kid going to college, etc. I have std CRT TVs from 30 yrs ago that still "work".

It's got to be a HD ready Panasonic 50" LCD TV. Do you guys get Panasonic??? Over here they cost about £5000.00 gbp.

It is impossible to give the LCD vs Plasma (or DLP, SXRD, etc.) any justice in few lines or paragraphs. If you really care - spend a few days reading the posts on AVS.

If you want a quick (and biased) opinion read on. Get plasma if you want a large screen. Most LCD's top out at 40-45 inches. You can get plasmas in 50" and above. Plasma has better black levels, and a more 3-dimensional look. Get LCD if you are into serious gaming, or need a very bright display for a non-light controlled room.

Forgot about the "myths" regading plasma ageing or burn-in. Basically issues from the past. I could write pages about this subject.

If you don't need a flat panel check out the Sony SXRD's. Very impressive.

If you want a BIG screen and have the room - go front projection.

Have fun on whatever you decide.

Lots of good advice here. I have both a Panasonic plasma and Sony LCD and like both equally (although my plasma is bigger and I tend to watch it more). Both are very good picture-wise, personally the whole 'black' thing is overrated. Both seem black enough to me (can't tell diff), although the plasma seems to have a brighter picture. Most better plasmas don't have a burn-in issue anymore.

Just make sure that if price is an issue, you also factor in the cost of installation, good component cables & surge protectors, and sound system. Believe me, it adds up very quick.

Damn right you are! I am ashamed to admit how much $$ I spent on those type of things.

A MUST for such a TV though. What good is it have all that capability and use crappy cables and get lines or screen door on the picture?

Tweeter is doing some nice markdowns on their Sony HDTV LCDs right now. I just got the 23" for $200 under the Sony sticker price.

Interesting discussion and very good advice - thank-you for your input/thoughts. In canada the 40"sony Bravia LCD XBR is priced at $4200 CDN and the 42 in Hitachi HDT52 for $3,600 cdn.

It is interesting that sony no longer makes plasma TV's. In any case, I will post my decision and thoughts on the product once the deed is done.

What's wrong with the Sharp Aquos line? They are ball park LCD price range & Have the best definition when seen side by side with the others.
