Aux input question
 

I have my NAV display out of the dash to install the Aux kit. However, unless I am blind there is no "spare" aux-in plug in my wiring bundle. There is only 1 white and 1 blue connector for the display. I read that a lot of you did this in 01's, '02's and '03's by changing out the radio module in the back and plugging in the aux kit up front.

What am I missing? Where is the little black connector (called X14118 in the Aux install manual) for the aux in? I felt all the way down this wire bundle until it disappears and there is no spare connecter back there... ideas? :dunno:

I did this on my '01 by replacing the radio module with one out of an '03. However, I did the AUX connections back on the radio module in the lower wheel well, not behind the dash.

Ahhh thanks Jeff. Somewhere I read that mid-year '02+ had the connector so I was going to go that route. I will just install it at the radio module itself (already put a '05 module in there). My DVD audio is already back there in the well so that will be convenient. Thanks for the quick reply.

I was expecting some improvement in sound but it is really noticeable. I now have DVD audio running in stereo through the aux input hard wired to the radio module directly. It sounds noticeably better than CDs and the 'old' radio. There is also finally plenty of line voltage getting to the amp and consequently it can be played very loudly now without breaking up.

While I was back there in the well I added a 150w sub amp and a 8" bazooka in the well which just happens to fit and hold itself firmly, while leaving 2" between the cone and the well wall. Put the spare tire cover back on and there is no trace of the equipment so I retained 100% of the storage space. Perfect. So now I have improved sound from the DVD, and all sources now have low bass that is severely lacking in OEM X5 system.

Thanks to the repository of articles and good discussions on this site I was able to save some cash by completing everything myself while managing to not kill myself or torch my car. Another donation has been sent. My trip to Hilton Head SC this weekend will be AWESOME now. :D

I'm also glad to hear that the AUX input is working out so well for you. I have my DVD input set up the same way and I agree, it makes a HUGE difference!!

so it is possible that you have to connect the AUX in the trunk and not behind the dash ? How can you tell by looking at the trunk radio module ? Would there be a free connector aswell ?

On the home page of this board, under Stereo, items 18, 19 and 20 all give instructions for installing the AUX input. Lots of good advice there. Good luck.:thumbup:

you can plug in the aux input into the connector behind the dash OR at the radio tuner in the back by disconnecting the white-red,white-blue, and white-(forget the other color) miniharness and connecting the aux right in there.

White-brown is the third color :) So that is the CD changer's connector ? So I can dismantle the AUX connector, and add those wires into the same plug ?

you don't dismantle the AUX connector. it disconnects (the one to the front) down there and the AUX in takes its place... your X5 is '03 NAV equipped, or later, right?
