The Home depot galvanized L bracket fit perfect for BMW opening. Shot while still set up in dining room table. mybimmer.net ABS bezel http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3434/...0fcf6720a6.jpg Cutting the hole for OEM knob to be used for a the kicker bass knob and a rotary switch. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3466/...8a5b52185e.jpg Fresh cut. before installing I colored it with a black sharpy. (Forcep bit was used) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3625/...23f9ed0a71.jpg Knobs installed http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2479/...e1af9bbf2b.jpg Side shot http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2479/...e3067e60be.jpg Notice that the pioneer name is no longer on top and the chrome strip alon ghte bottom is gone. I just used a matte black decal from ebay to cover it up. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2600/...521ef64aa4.jpg Kicker bass knob opened and filed down to fit into OEM Knob http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2640/...2723f47ab0.jpg Test Fit... http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2655/...593140dac5.jpg More to follow... |

HU Test fit. I needed to move the bracket up to fit the factory screws. Wood clear coat was lightly scratch but a little wipe removes it. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2448/...69f8d6137f.jpg OEM Nav removed. Huge opening. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2493/...5297822cf4.jpg Bracket moved up to line up to the factory Holes. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3510/...fc66456c05.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3529/...b275168010.jpg Notice I used silicone for the knob installs. Its done in case it breaks or needs to be swapped out later. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2572/...33fbb70329.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2494/...8f6551bf1b.jpg Running wires took about 5 hours since many parts needed to be loosened or removed. Also since the OEM tuner was in the rear all the wires need to be run along with the RCAs for the amp and reverse camera. The power seat harness was not disconnected since I heard that this will require the dealer to reset the airbag lights. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3522/...f51373c222.jpg Wires/cables are run through the middle of the car. The red cable is the Monster 6 channel RCA cable. It looks like a 4 guage power cable. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2473/...d12ed0090d.jpg Screwdriver used to give room when lifing the carpet. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3488/...9c3ec6a4cb.jpg Power, antenna and HD tuner. HD tuner is currently placed under the seat but it will be relocated to the rear by the spare tire. This was a pain to install since the OEM antenna cable is in the rear. I needed to run 2 long antenna cables since the MSN direct needed to be in the front. The connection is in this order: From OEM antenna to MSN direct to HD Tuner. Antenna ends there since the signal is then passed into the head unit via the IPBUS. The HU antenna jack is not used. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2676/...85f0c16d00.jpg Climate control removed and the wires HU wires behind http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2543/...5c39ec9e3a.jpg Wires tied together. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3443/...88e9d7b97c.jpg GPS Nav antenna placed on the air duct behind the speedometer under the dash. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3466/...fa16cb2034.jpg VSS wire plugged in behind the speedometer. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2625/...36e6790dbb.jpg Taking apart upper console for mic placement and removal of motorola BT kit mic. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2565/...26d8bbc0a3.jpg Relocated the sunroof switch to the other side to mount the HU mic closer to me while using the OEM mic cap. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3571/...947856dc11.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2549/...6a356e6537.jpg Mic mounted in left most space http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3500/...938edf8f81.jpg SWI-PS connected. Original wire is cut to connect the SWI. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2533/...b21b53d301.jpg Wire tapped all speaker connections to 8 speakers. The car has 10 speakers but I am only using 8 and they will be going through a kicker passive crossover. Kicker amp below is used for the Subwoofer. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3443/...8a804a02d4.jpg Crossovers. Note the battery is below. Picture is located on the back left of the vehicle. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3479/...56fc7f7ab3.jpg 4 Channel amp installed. Sub amp installed directly below it. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3541/...891a68987e.jpg Finally fully installed picture. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2476/...28c067d68d.jpg Two and a half days of installing and I now can finally relax and enjoy it. Headrest monitors installed and pictures to follow. |
:wow: Massive open heart surgery for X.
Did you use the OEM sub? |
No. I did not have DSP but I heard not so good things about the DSP anyway. All Speakers swapped for Kicker.

Amazing! This was in what year X5? What did you use to track down which wire was for what?
|
This was on a 2003 X5 3.0 that had OEM Nav and no DSP.
The speed sensor wire I got from this site but as far as the speakers go I used a 9V battery after tapping the wires. Each pair are twisted together so it made it easier. The head unit is bypassed so I did not have to find the parking break wire. The passenger can adjust the nav in motion or watch movies. :) The only wire that was not on the factory radio harness was the illumination wire. This tells the HU to dim when the lights are on. I found this on one of the harnesses that was plugged into the OEM nav. None of the factory harnesses were cut with exception to the steering wheel control wire. In order to connect to the SWI-PS steering control module it needed to be cut. The wire color was in the installation guide. BTW - Up for sale soon are: OEM Nav MK4 w/ 16:9 screen Intravee II w/ alpine module Motorola Bluetooth Kit Hardwired HF1000. Plug and play BTW since I bould all the modules to connect it to the X. OEM Tuner OEM Amp EAS Video module PM Me if you are interested in any of the parts. |
