Sound from only one side of my audio system

Hello

I have a 2004 X5 with the DSP set up and last night i found that I am only getting sound/music from the right side speakers front and back and nothing from the left side( fornt and back)
Has any one any ideas what could have happened?

Thank you
jim

That sounds like either a bad radio module or a bad connection between the radio module and DSP amp.

The radio feeds just left and right channels to the DSP amp. So, if you are missing one whole side, it is an output thing from the radio not reaching the amp. I would disconnect the plugs from both. Maybe it is just a loose connection. You might also try connecting a voltmeter to the radio wires to confirm that you are getting an output signal at various points. Or, if you do not have a voltmeter, you could connect a cheap speaker to the wires to confirm output.

Hello Brian

Thank you. Does having Nav change anything
I will check the Amp connections first as they should be the easiest

The dealer wants 165.00 just to check it.
Thank you
Jim

Nope, navigation does not matter. Though, it does affect the location of the radio module. In a non-nav car, the radio module is the thing with the tape or cassette slot in the dash. In a navigation car, the radio is a non-descript silver box in the trunk with the amp, nav computer, and other related components.

Hello Brian

Thank you

the Amp /DSP is on the passager side behind the trunk panel and the Nav and CD player units are on the driver side behind the panel. correct?

Thank you
Jim

The higher up of BMW amps can drop channels and mess up internally. The DSP amps usually just drop a channel or two at a time, while the logic7 amps from the E65 7 series do weird shit like cut out the floor subs and put low pass sub signal to the mids in the rear doors... And to top it off, no one at the dealer, not even regional trainers seem to have any idea on the internals of the amps. They just say it has "FM" (fuckin magic)

In the X5, the DSP, nav computer, CD changer & phone module are all in the compartment on the left side. The radio module is next to the battery.

Hello Brian

Thank you
I will check the connections tonight and hopefully I only have a loose connection and nothing more serious

I guess the sub woofer is on the right side.

Thank you
Jim

Yes, the sub is on the right side compartment.

I am betting on a bad connection somewhere. You have the "New Gen" radio in your car and those are not prone to failure. (Not to say that they never fail, but it is not a high failure item.)

Hello Brian

Thank you
you seem to know a lot about the systems on the X5 or BMWs
what do you do for a living? if i can ask?

Thank you
Jim
