What do you do for a living? You are a very patient & clever guy.

Why are the likes of BMW, Mercedes etc. not clamouring for your skills for big money? - Probably because they are German & will only employ Germans until it suits them better. That's why the McLaren F1 team suffered last year. The Mercedes built engines kept blowing up. This year they have capitulated & brought in engineers who are not German to design & manufacture their F1 engines.

Keep up the good work. It is much appreciated worldwide.

Best Rgds, Mike:thumbup:

In my opinion, the easiest place to access the i-bus wire is the 3 pin connection to the CD changer (12V, ground and i-bus are the 3 leads)

Thnx wat color is it and do i really have to cut a wire from the connector ?
Are there any other suitable places in case the car doesnt have a CDC?

Thanks! I used to be an electronics service guy. Over my career I have installed and serviced car stereos, home stereos, telephones, before moving into maritime electronics. There I installed and serviced depth sounders, radars, sat navs, sat com systems, auto pilots, weather radar receivers, sonars, VHF and HF radio transmitters.
I then moved into broadcast where I was a support engineer for video transmission systems and had the good fortune to attend 2 x Olympic Games.

I became interested in software programming, and wrote some diagnostic utilities for the broadcast systems we used back then, and the software ran on a handheld computer (Psion) that I used at the time.

I now still work in broadcast, although in the sales side of the business.

All of this helps to develop the right attitude and approach that anything is possible, given sufficient curiosity and the right logical approach.

I now own a BMW and love the ability to get in and diagnose the system by myself :-)

I assist local people here in upgrading their BMW systems and I have done conversions and upgrades that the local BMW dealership say is impossible!

They don't know I exist... and remember, a local country agent has to obey the rules created by the factory to maintain factory compliance...

In the E38 and E39, the ibus is readily available on the connector visible behind the CD changer access panel (E39) or LH rear taillight access panel (E38).

I-bus = white/grey/yellow (the only wire with 3 colours)
Ground = brown
+12V = red with green stripe

I normally just openthe panel, and connect to the wires using crocodile clips straight into the back of the plug. No unplugging or dismantling necessary.

In the E46 it is less accessible - you may need to remove the trunk trim side panel to gain access to the wiring...?? (I haven't worked on many E46s)
