RDC-TMC (US) compatible with MKIV Navigation?
Hey folks! I'm new to x5world, and this is my first post. I don't exactly have an x5, but I've been a veteran of E46fanatics for a little while now with my '03 330cic. Anyways, I've heard that this is the place to come for MKIV based navigation tweaks, and I have a question for you gurus.
Clear Channel is using a format for TMC called RDC. It is broadcast through the FM radio much like I've read about in some of the European posts. I'm curious if this would be something that is useful for us US residents to retrofit our units to TMC? This is new for us (1-2 years) whereas, TMC has been available in Europe for quite some time. I don't know much about the protocols or if much is involved with the retrofit, but I thought I would throw this out there for the thought of still keeping some life into these old units. |
I've been wondering something along th esame lines.
SuperSleeper,
I have posted pertaining to the same subject but a much more specific question. Anyway, the MKIV does not support RDC/TMC itself. In fact that has nothing to do with the Navigation system,it is actually the Radio module. As far as I know you must install a TMC device to your vehicle in order to receive the traffic information. The BM54 and possibly the BM53 business radio have the TMC built in. These can be purchased from bimmernav. The only question is will these actually work in the US? I don't know, maybe. Hopefully someon eelse can shed more light on this. I am sure as TMC becomes more readily available there will be more retrofit solutions. ------Kham |
You are stil missing one thing, TMC has to be on the Navteq maps as well, so al other broadcasting, BM that supports it for US want do you any good unless navteq does its part as well

Yes, of course.
Yes, E5M1R, you are correct, but this is obvious. More importantly I forgot to mention that currently clear channel is the only provider for TMC/RDC and they only relay that through a Siemens/VDO interface which may be problematic due to the MKIV nav and the BM53/BM54 radios being Alpine units. It seems as if an external TMC/RDC receiver is the only option. Some one more knowledgeable about this should hopefully chime in.
